A whole different view of capitalism, that provides insight into what should be mankind's heart within the system and structure of capitalism. It's interesting that back through history you can see both the good and the bad of capitalists. Those who understood the responsibility of having wealth and those who did not. I enjoyed it very much and gave support to my own thoughts on the subject.

About the Author

Barbara B. Levin is a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Her research interests include studying teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and the development of teacher thinking across the career span, integrating technology into the K–16 curriculum, and using case-based pedagogies and problem-based learning in teacher education. Levin is an associate editor of Teacher Education Quarterly and has authored or coauthored numerous journal articles and three books, including Who Learns What From Cases and How? The Research Base on Teaching With Cases (1999), Energizing Teacher Education and Professional Development With Problem-Based Learning (2001), and Case Studies of Teacher Development: An In-Depth Look at How Thinking About Pedagogy Develops Over Time (2003). Levin completed a PhD in educational psychology at the University of California at Berkeley in 1993. Prior to that, she taught elementary school students and was a computer specialist for 17 years.

About the Author
Reverend Gloria N. Adams is a graduate of World Missions Bible College where she received a bachelors degree as an ordained minister in theology and biblical studies. Rev. Adams regularly teaches the prayer training class at the Bible Training Center, Win Institute, at Celebration Church—City of Champions in Columbia, MD. She is a small group ministry leader and participates in the Christian Guidance Ministry at Celebration Church. A devoted mother of two daughters, she is also part of the pastoral care program at Howard County General Hospital. Rev. Adams has traveled and provided workshops for women’s retreats, women’s conferences and prayer breakfasts throughout the State of Maryland. A recipient of the Minnie B. Davis Faithful Women award from her church, Gloria is a respected role model for women in her church and community. She has worked for the Food and Drug Administration as a chemist for more than 30 years since graduating from Howard University. Rev. Adams is the spiritual advisor for the Celebration Church School of Spiritual Dance and Angelic Steps dance ministries. She has researched and written 14- week semester syllabus and lessons for the dance school as well as workshops for the dance ministry at their annual retreat. Rev. Adams is a freelance writer and member of the Baltimore Christian Writer’s Group. Her poem, “Intimate Moments with Jesus,” was published in the renowned National Library of Poetry, The Other Side of Midnight, which is a collection of poems. Rev. Adams has a heart for the Great Commission to be taken around the world, wherever the Lord leads her. This passion for the lost and the needy has led her to become a missionary. She has taken several mission trips to Haiti, Trinidad, and Israel.

An adaptation of performance pieces from Ensler's Obie Awardwinning one-woman show, inspired by several hundred interviews the playwright had with women about their genitals. The work, Ensler says, is intended to free women from the shame many have been taught to feel regarding their vaginas and, by extension, their sexuality. It's crucial, she says, ``for women to tell their stories, to share them with other people . . . Our survival as women depnds on this dialogue.'' The monologues (which range from a painful account of rape to a droll record of a woman learning to really see her vagina for the first time, in a ``vagina workshop'') vary greatly in effect, and other portions of the work (which run from character monologues to interpolations by Ensler to lists drawn from her questions to women, such as ``What does a vagina smell like?'') are fragmentary. One of the most liberating books I've ever read.

This book is a life changer. I read it six months ago and I cannot believe how much it has liberated me and my attitude towards my body. Like everyone says, you cannot put it down once you begin reading it. Ensler talks about the things I've kept hidden. I never knew just how central to my life my vagina is. A chapter about menstruation, my god, people talk about this? A chapter about orgasm and hair and the fear we have of our own body. The part we never like to talk about. The chapter on birth is amazing, and until then I never knew how complex the woman's vagina is. For a woman of 22, this is a very important read. If you ever get to see her read from The Vagina Monologues, go. She puts on an amazing show. Some people think it's simple but I feel it's life-changing. I would be a very different person without it and not many books can have that kind on impact.

The foundation of a great show

The Vagina Monologues is a stage piece, and it works *much* better on stage than it does as a pure book. As a stage show, it is thought-provoking, funny and appalling. A good production of this piece picks you up and carries you along. It has something to say to almost everyone, regardless of whether you are comfortable saying the word "vagina" or not.
Somehow, when I read the play, I am less captivated, and more aware of the flimsiness of the words. But the point of the thing is its performance. It is clear, from the afterword to the book, and from people I know who have been involved in productions, and from lots of people who have seen the show, that involvement with a production of this piece can change someone's life. And it really is an engaging piece: funny and moving.
When I first heard about the project (an attempt to address a culture where people rarely say the word "vagina", but there are thousands of words for "penis"), I thought it would be interesting and useful to people who aren't comfortable saying "vagina" out loud. Since I have no problem saying it, I thought it would have little relevance to me. When I saw the performance, I knew I had been wrong. But I don't know if I would have gotten that from the book alone.
I am giving this book five stars, because it works as it is intended to work: on stage. And I am glad I own it, because it is nice to dip into from time to time, when I want to recapture the effect of being in the audience. Plus, the afterword to the "V-Day" edition is extremely interesting and moving.

not quite what I had expected

I was somewhat dissapointed in this book. I had heard nothing but great reviews of both the book and the performances. But when I finished the book, I found myself very dissapointed. I didn't really laugh. I didn't really cry. It was decent, and perhaps there are women out there who *needed* to read it, but I just didn't find it as inspiring and wonderful as so many others have.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bunch recounts his search for America's "best" jukebox, somewhat ambiguously defined as the one whose selection of songs is "in perfect sync with its time and place." The book's subtext, however, is generational angst. Self-classified as a member of "Generation Y," Bunch takes up his mission as an expression of the restless, youthful energy he fears will be suppressed by his recent decision to marry and move to the suburbs. His anxiety about his personal shift in direction translates into concern about cultural changes: the jukebox, a symbol of regional identity and cultural diversity, is threatened by the increasing homogenization of society. While Bunch does find pockets of authenticity in rural Mississippi and in inner-city Chicago and Detroit, he juggles too many thematic balls--jukeboxes, his personal life, the state of American society--to maintain a clear focus. Portraits of individual keepers of the jukebox faith met along the way are memorable; ultimately this volume is more successful as an American travelogue than as a music-lover's journal.

After a quasimystical experience in a West Side Manhattan bar, he embarked upon a quest for the country's greatest jukebox-or rather for the greatest jukebox collection representing the golden 45s of his youthful recollection. In this account, he tells of visiting bars in Chicago; Hoboken, New Jersey; Greenville, Mississippi; and beyond, recounting conversations and adventures from his somewhat patchwork geographic, as well as personal, journey. Most absorbing are his talks with the locals as they reminisce about the early roots of the jukebox's greatest stars (Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, and more). This breezy quest will appeal to pop and country music fans and their libraries.

Yuppie journalist Bunch, a self-proclaimed Rear Guard Baby Boomer, takes off on a quest for the best jukebox in the country. In the process, he intends to bear witness to a bit of Americana rapidly becoming extinct. Jukeboxes saw their heyday several decades ago; now, with the advent of compact discs, stricter laws regarding drinking and driving, and encroaching suburbanization, the roadhouses that were the traditional venue for jukeboxes are, Bunch finds, down on their luck. Nevertheless, with Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and Frank Sinatra as his spiritual guides, Bunch travels to Hoboken, hoping to confirm a rumor of an all-Sinatra jukebox; to Chicago and vicinity to meet a guy named Dale Evans, the human jukebox, and to visit the Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corp., where workers once cranked out 125 jukeboxes daily (they're down to 30 or so today); to Greenville, Mississippi, where juke joints rule over jukeboxes; and finally, to Detroit, where, at Honest? Time Travelin' Man

I loved Jukebox America. The author makes prose lyrical. It's a fun trip with the Spirit in the Sky, in search of the Juke of the Covenant. Anyone interested in the American musical journey will know that this is a worthwile roadtrip. It was over too soon.

Jukebox America

If you are a fan of jukeboxes or music recorded on 45's, be aware of this book. I own a jukebox and have about 1,000 45's and didn't particularly like it. If our hero had been my age (60), liked all 50's music, then I might have identified with him and his story. Instead he was a 30's something with a yuppy mentality searching for a holy grail that doesn't exist except in his own mind. I empathized with his sadness about the loss of a bygone era, but that was about it. He threw in a part about searching for the real Elvis and here is where I thought he really missed his mark. It would be like me writing about Rudolph Valentino with no first hand knowledge of the man. Nothing was learned here. I also got tired of his political commentary along the way.
