A boy who is all alone in the world, a seagull from heaven who wears a party hat and red jacket, and two dogs who have escaped from the dog pound, all have an amazing adventure when they ‘shrink down in size,’ and travel to Caterpillar Kingdom to do battle with an evil alien called Chagga Toombe.
The seagull angel has been allowed to return to Earth for just a few days and the Owl God can only hope that the seagull does not discover, and use, all of the powers at his disposal.
Watching over them is the mysterious Ada, and Danny, Bongo Wiggins, Brixan, and Little Jakey, all get themselves into some strange situations, brought about by the seagull angel and together, upon this journey, they all learn the true meaning of friendship and love.
Meanwhile, Bird Heaven is visited by the Dog God, the Bee Queen, and the Spider Queen, all of whom are greatly concerned by the events that are occurring on Earth; events that are happening because the seagull angel has begun to use his magical powers.

Captivating

If you read this book just as a bit of entertainment, it’s good fun. Really good fun. Or, you can look deeper and discover the importance of friendship, karma , why not to tread on insects, and why it is important that Jammy Dodgers are round.
Danny, one is led to believe, is an orphan who starts the story with no real friends. He seems accident-prone and blamed for many things that aren’t really his fault. After accidentally burning his adopted parent’s house to the ground they abandon him (okay – that was his fault), and he is taken in by a strange but kindly woman whom local kids believe is a witch. Bongo Wiggins is a dead seagull with a mission, although he doesn’t realise it. He was befriended by Danny, who found him injured, but shortly after the poor bird was killed saving the life of a bulldog. For both Danny and Bongo, it was the first friendship of their lives, savagely broken before it had barely begun. So Bongo hates heaven because his only friend is not there. He is allowed to return to Earth, as a ghost spirit to spend a few short days with Danny.
Unfortunately, while all this is going on, a violent terror lurks in the insect world and the future of the caterpillar kingdom is threatened. Unwittingly, Danny and Bongo are drawn into this conflict …. and there my spoiler ends. You’ll want to read this story for yourself!
The intertwining plot is interlaced with a multitude of characters, with highly entertaining names and personalities, and so well written that after a few pages the reader dismisses any notion that this is a children’s story. Apparently ridiculous scenarios, such as a dead seagull wearing a party hat and holding an ever-full champagne glass are logically revealed and are accepted without question. Talking caterpillars, dogs and other creatures expressing fear and despair are absorbed as part of the colourful fabric of the story. If you are aged between eight or eighty, you’ll love this story. I did.
This is the third story by Setlu Vairst that I have read, and although each is self-contained, I am beginning to see the subtle connections that he promised will link them all together at the end. How that unfolds I don’t know, but it will be entertaining, that’s for sure!
