The Complete Dream of the Rarebit Fiend (1904-1913), by Ed.) Winsor McCay; (Ulrich Merkl

Winsor McCay, aka Silas, is regarded as one of the founding fathers of newspaper comics in the United States, a pioneer in the panel-based artform and early animation techniques at the turn of the 20th century. Drawn to McCay's fantastic, imaginative storytelling (which famously includes the Little Nemo in Slumberland series), German author and editor Ulrich Merkl has produced his first major publishing effort, a limited-edition book about and DVD compilation of McCay's Dream of the Rarebit Fiend. Merkl, who has previously authored three books about medieval book illumination and many articles about art historical themes, is an avid collector of comic books and original comic art, making him an apt steward to preserve the 1904-1913 strip for future generations. The massive, over-stuffed (12x17-inch, 464-page) volume is a pleasure for the initiated and uninitiated alike.

At Last the Fiend gets the treatment it deserves!
By Thelonious
"Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" is McCay's overlooked masterpiece. "Little Nemo" gets all the press (don't get me wrong - it deserves the highest possible praise) but The Fiend is often equally compelling and more psychologically astute. More adult in subject matter than Nemo, it is less visually resplendant, but still quite powerful in its invocation of the fears and hopes underlying our day-to-day thoughts. Freud and Jung would both have found much to entertain them here.

This collection is the gold standard of reprints, and I cannot recommend it highly enough for the true devotee. I've been waiting for this volume for years. There are, however, three potential drawbacks to this volume:

1. Price - it's on the expensive side.
2. Size - it's truly massive (it's 17 in x 12 in and weighs nearly 10 lbs) which makes it hard to store and awkward to read.
3. Selection - Although you receive the complete strips, and quite a few are printed in the book, the bulk of them are on CD-Rom. I suppose this makes sense, given the sheer volume of material, but also inclines one to quibble over the selection (there are strips I'd have liked to see in the book, not just on the CD).

These are mere quibbles - this is the definitive edition and is unlikely to be surpassed any time soon.

For those wishing to dip their toes in these rarefied waters without taking the full plunge, I recommend:

The Dover reprint edition: Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend - the best intro
The Checker "Saturdays" collection: Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend: The Saturdays - a great follow-up to the Dover collection

The Checker "Early Works of Winsor Mccay" series (9 vols so far) reprints a lot of material, but in highly variable quality and at a very small size. There are more strips in the Canemaker book on McCay as well as the Fantagraphics "Daydreams and Nightmares" collection (which I highly recommend).

A Museum within a Book
By Brent R. Swanson
Ulrich Merkl's "Dream of a Rarebit Fiend" is a rare instance of a book being as much a work of art as the subject it chronicles. This hefty 12 X 17 volume has few predecessors or peers. Another Rainbow's similarly proportioned "Mickey Mouse in Color" comes to mind, along with the Sunday page collections from Sunday Press and Manuscript Press's "Prince Valiant" collections. As is the case with those collections, size happily corresponds with quality and importance. If you are interested in Winsor McCay, the comic strip genre, or humorous and/or fantastic drawing and cartooning, this volume is indispensable.

It's difficult to know where to begin cataloguing the wonders of this volume. It is 464 pages thick, printing about two-thirds of the strip's run; the entire 821 strip run is included on the DVD in the back of the book, and any of these pages can be downloaded and printed. The dvd also includes the entire text of the book and the fragmentary remains of McCay's "Gertie on Tour" animated cartoon.

The book opens with defintions of terms, a chronology of Winsor McCay's life and career, discussions of the origins and predecessors (and imitators) of "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend," cross-reference guides to subject matter and historical figures that appear in the strip, as well as an intriguing guide to comic strips, comic books, and movies that appear to have taken their inspiration from the strip if not from particular images in the strip, and essays by Alfredo Castelli and Jeremy Taylor. Taylor's "Some Archetypal Symbolic Aspects of 'Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend'" might be loading McCay's work with more baggage than the artist could have dreamed of, but it does present some intriguing possibilities and starting points for further discussion.

The main event is the collection of restored strips, many previously uncollected and never before seen in this size and clarity (the strips on the dvd are unrestored, but they do represent the entire "Rarebit Fiend" canon). McCay was among the most prolific of cartoonists, and while most of his art is at least interesting, not all of it has transcended its time. "Rarebit Fiend" had moments of utter genius and a lot of middling stretches and the occasional dead-ended idea. But middling McCay is usually more interesting than the above-average work of McCay's contemporaries. And with the abundance of reference material included in the front matter, it's possible to trace tne genesis of many of these strips, as well as to see how McCay reused some of his brainstorms in the more refined "Little Nemo" Sunday series.

The work of Winsor McCay is not easy to reprint and not always easy to read, but this book brings both the artist and his work closer to us than any previous collection.
