Helpful, but not enough to attempt the exams
By Stephen Northcutt
The Wiley book is well laid out and the writing is crisp and clear. Mike has a gift to explain a topic well in the minimum number of words and I hope he continues to write on information technology topics and I look forward to his future books.
I had to give the book a low score, two stars, because it fails to meet its purpose. It purports to be a preparation guide for the GIAC GSEC exam series. I wanted to evaluate the book to be sure the content can prepare students for the exam and in my opinion, it is not adequate for that task.
Since the book is useful at an outline level for reviewing the material, I will focus this review on the areas where I believe it falls drastically short in preparing you for the exams. MS Windows Security accounts for 1/7 of the GSEC exam. Sadly, the coverage in the book is apparently based on a very old version of the course. The best advice I can give you is read the course description for day 5 on the web and buy a good, up to date Windows 2000/XP book or two.
There is no coverage in the Prep Guide of the cookbook (hands on) material which is testable as of July 2003 students and beyond. There are hands on questions for every tool that is covered by the cookbook in the exam bank.
The wireless section, appendix B, is testable. I did not see coverage of wireless in the book.
The author speaks authoritatively from time to time about the nature or content of the exam. It is may be dangerous to do this. The exam is dynamically generated. Questions are pulled from subject buckets from an enormous bank of questions. No two exams are ever alike.
Finally, it is important to remember that the GSEC day books are over 2,000 pages and the Hands On cookbook is several hundred pages as well. It is impossible to fully cover that much material in 480 pages, even with a gifted author.

No real bang for your buck
By A Customer
I spent a few hours looking through this book at a local bookstore only to come away quite disappointed.
The information contained in this book won't come close to replacing the SANS GIAC course material, nor is it a text I would recommend as a supplement to anyone's study efforts.
The information contained in the book is not only in the GIAC course, but can also be obtained freely on the internet with little effort.
The GIAC certifications focus heavily on hands-on exposure and experience and this is reflected in the testing. This book doesn't take the student to the level of understanding needed to attempt the exams for the GSEC certification.
One must also consider the fact that the GSEC certification is not a stagnant course, the course is always being reviewed and updated to keep it relevant, and if you buy the full online course the GIAC materials are made available to students when updated during their certification period.
It really is unfortunate that this book doesn't deliver what it implies. It brings back memories of the plethora of low value MCSE texts that hit the market when that certification was believed to be the hot ticket to a job. They scraped the surface, but didn't really prepare you to sit in front of a machine and do the job.
If you only want to challenge the certification spend the money on the GIAC texts, not only are they directly applicable to the material tested, they are an excellent future reference.

More like a Pre Study Guide
By A Customer
This is a good book to use if you have never had any experience with security. It's kind of like a GSEC for Dummies. Read this book, and then take the SANS course, and use their materials to prepare for the exam. The SANS course is such an amazing program that really teaches you everything you need to know to not only create the company security policy, but how to set everything up and manage it. Logical and Hands on.

We all discovered roleplaying in different ways, and we all hope that our kids will love it as much as we do. Little Wizards is a roleplaying game for inventive and inquisitive kids, developed to introduce them to the joy and creativity of stepping into a whole new world. It's quick enough to learn in just a couple minutes, engaging enough for older kids and parents to play with their little ones, and works just like the RPGs we've all been playing since Red Box. Little Wizards is a Crafty Games production presented as a compact children's reader-style book, including everything you need to play and an introduction to Coinworld, where the Little Wizards live, play, and rise up as heroes.

Great idea but only half-done
By Auslander
This book is a great idea, but it is not for the faint of heart. I have a feeling that the other reviewers are probably expert, long-term role-players. For novice or occasional role-players, it tends to be quite vague. Our family spent around an hour and a half just sorting out character creation alone. This kind of tested everyone's patience.

Then, within the first 5 minutes of the first tale (semi-scripted adventure), my two players went entirely off the rails and wanted to just go do whatever struck their fancy. Now please understand, I'm all about open play and improv, but that only works when you have a more comprehensive rule set to operate off of for general events. I found myself flipping through the book WAY too often, frustratingly asking, why isn't X or Y addressed?

Now you may call me OCD and you'd be partially right. I like to approach a game with the confidence of knowing the basic rule system well enough to improvise.

And that's really the thing. Little Wizards is not a system. About half of the book has to do with character creation and world background; between that and the included adventures, mechanics are mostly hand-waved.

Now this all led to frustration on our parts (as it was unclear which events genuinely required dice rolls), but my 8 year old still enjoyed character creation and the basics of role-play -and is looking forward to playing again. So that's what really matters, right?

Lastly, I'd add this: consequences are non-existent in the game. There is no real loss if a player experiences a failure. I will be re-tooling this for our next session - out of the "box", it's too influenced by the modern notion of "everyone gets a prize" which, ironically, really dilutes the feeling of success and accomplishment you get from finishing a difficult adventure.

Overall, an excellent idea, a pretty good universe, but still feels half-done.

If you know what it’s like trying to explain to your 4 year old why ...
By corethree
I play table top with my wife and have three young boys (at the moment of writing this.) As they get older they have shown interest in joining our games. If you know what it’s like trying to explain to your 4 year old why he can’t play Vampire the Masquerade or some other adult table top then perhaps this game has caught your eye as well.

Me, my wife, my 8 year old, and my 4 year old have given this game a spin and I have made some interesting discoveries.
1. This game does a great job connecting to younger children in a fun way. My boys love Coin World and its locations. They love the theme. And they LOVE the simplicity of the game mechanics.
2. This game has helped me understand what my children want form a role play game. My 4 year old was like a fish to water when his character’s teacher asked him to demonstrate potion making by making his favorite potion. My 4 year old loved the attention, went right to work with his toys pretending to make a potion, and loved picking the effect and hearing the description of what happened. He was all smiles when everyone in the room started clapping. I thought to myself, I don’t think this is the first time he has pretended to create a potion, and here he is doing it in front of his family and we are interested and giving him our attention. Connecting to a four year old at that level is not always easy.
3. Because of the game’s simplicity my 8 year old came alive with interest to run a game. He is not intimidated by the mechanics, he gets it, and he wants to explore his creativity as a story maker. He has wanted to run D&D games before but he could never quite pull it off. This game has posed no obstacles for him. He has arrived at his creative outlet.
4. The game’s mood encourages relaxed-just-go-with-it style playing and that really works for my children. If they want Legs, Minecraft monsters, and Link from Zelda to be a part of this world … then done! Link is riding through a Lego forest on an Ender Dragon, and the players go NUTS! And the mood and setting is crafted in a way to where that sort of thing is not disruptive in the slightest. Again, the kinds go freaking NUTS!

The rules are very light. This is almost barely a game and more of a setting. Characters have 3 attributes (body, heart, and mind) and then a couple vague wizard powers that do whatever the player says they do (such as “spellcasting”). And that’s really it. Player says “I wanna do blah”. The story teller says “OK, the difficulty for that will be EASY” (or whatever he thinks.) The player rolls 2d6 and gets the target number or does not. Pass or fail. Modifiers from attributes or powers will only be a 0, +1, or +2. That’s all there is to it. There is a simple experience system that makes sense and works well.

One thing that took me off guard was the way powers are done. There are two classes. They both have the power “Spellcasting”. Most of the powers are vague like that. What does it do? The player just makes up a spell on the spot and the story teller decides if Spellcasting can do that or not and how hard it will be to do. That’s it. Those are the “mechanics.” At first I was kinda put off by it but it turns out this is exactly the reason my 4 year old can play this game. If the “mechanics” were any different he would not be as capable of playing as he is. I wish readers could see how excited he gets. He just starts yelling “I shoot a fireball out of my wand, that chases the bad guy down the hall, and when it hits him it sets his pants on fire, and he runs away really fast, and then slips on water, and there are rubber ducks everywhere!!!!” Then I go, “uhhhh, OK, roll your dice and get an 8 or higher.” It works just like that and I’m learning that it has to when you are 4 years old.

You don’t want this game if you are looking for a game “system”. It’s not that. But whatever it is, it’s a hit with my kids. I would be lying if I did not tell you that I find this game to be the most uninteresting and uninspiring table top game I play but of the games I play with my children it’s not bad. Seeing them have fun diffidently makes it worth it.

One criticism I do have is that this game is not quite as unisex as I would have it. The borders of the pages are purple and there are absolutely no rules for violence of any kind. Evidently you don’t “fight” anything in this game. Uhhh … little boys do not play games void of hitting things. So I had to come up with a system. My system is that everything has three hearts like in a Zelda game that represent life and players can describe attacks that do one heart of damage. A couple of tweaks like that though and the game is little boy approved. I’m sure the authors would scoff at me. They make it pretty clear in the rules that this game has no “losers” or “losing”. *rolling eyes* That silliness is my only real criticism and I’ll balance that criticism by saying that the 3 nonviolent quests included in the book really did help me to balance our games away from hack and slash and into something that I think is more appropriate for young children. But I’m telling you, when the 4 year old wants to smack something, you better give him some freaking dice to roll!

Great fun
By Bryce
My kids love this. They are 6 and 10 year old boys, and really get a kick out of it. My 10 year old has been the "narrator" for a few of his friends that come over to the house. I've written a few of my own stories based on the Little Wizards framework, and it has turned out great. Thanks for a fun world!

Review
Hugo Pratt is a gifted writer, a natural born story-teller. Milo Manara is an equally gifted and talented artist. Together they recreate true and accurate colonial history based on one small episode of conflict between Native Americans and the Puritan settlers. The Native Americans become individuals, the settlers and townsfolk are vividly portrayed. The friendships and the ultimate tragedy born of misunderstandings and human foibles (on both sides) unrolls before the readers eyes in an unforgettable manner. This is gifted storytelling in a graphic novel format that provides insight as well as entertainment. -- Midwest Book Review

Excellent book; slightly unfortunate formatting
By Cheston Gasik
The art is amazing and the story is compelling.

I picked up Volume 1 (the first half of the story, which is collected in its entirety here) while I was in Germany and loved it, so I decided to get the full story in English.
Sadly, despite the book being published at the same page dimensions in both languages, the images are at a lower scale in this English version. They really look beautiful in the German version where you see more of the art and have less empty margin.

A moment in history
By Denzuko1
I did not expect much from the book other than its art form and certain erotic ingredients. After reading the whole book, I find the story line quite appealing and it does drive my emotions.

It is a story of early migrants to the United State of America and the story describe the tough environment that one family face. On one side, they were outcasted by their own people, while on the other side they were attacked by native Indians.

If you are looking for more sexual excitement from this book, I would not recommend it. But if you want to inmense yourself in a nice story, then this would be a good book to read.

A very entertaining story with great artwork.
By Ervin Mubarekyan
Manara's art speaks for itself, so no need to go on and on about it. But the stories written by him are usually pointless sex tales. The difference with Indian Summer is that Pratt actually gave him a great story (the struggles of early settlers for survival, and their unpredictable relations with the native indians). Manara expresses the emotions of his characters beautifully through his pencil. For those who like action, there is plenty of that as well. The duo's other book 'El Gaucho' is also a powerful graphic novel. This was a $20 well spent. PS: I've reviewed hundreds of graphic novels at my personal web page. Give it a shot.

The Measurement of Appearance, 2nd Edition, by Richard S. Hunter, Richard W. Harold

This second edition of a unique text/reference identifies the appearance attributes of objects and the methods available for measuring them, bringing together much material not previously organized for ready reference. The primary premise here is that ``object appearance'' involves not only color, but such attributes as gloss, luster, and translucency. The first part of the book, concerned with nature of appearance, draws from the fields of physiology and psychology and considers the eye-brain combination and the way it receives and interprets light signals. This is followed by a consideration of the optical properties of objects from the physical standpoint. The second part of the book deals with the numerical scales used to measure object appearance. The discussion here draws on psychophysics in describing the uses of physical techniques to give numbers having psychological significance. The third part of the book covers instruments for the measurement of the attributes of object appearance, their principles of design, and a survey of the major ones in use. The final chapter discusses specific applications of appearance measurement. Includes appendixes and a glossary.

There Is A Generation: Kids of

"Laugh out-loud funny" by a "Master Storyteller," to quote the book's editor, who has written and published numerous novels herself.
In 1950s West Texas, best friends Tim and Hect, two mischief-makers in their middle teens, are enjoying the high life. Coddled in the type of lifestyles that allows them to play war with .22 caliber semiautomatic rifles, they suddenly find their world turned upside down when their game turns into a ghastly murder, or so they believe.
For a final hoot of the day, Hect has the idea to set ablaze an old shack in a forgotten auto junkyard. Tim readily agrees, though he thinks his friend's target is a wasp nest in a mesquite bush. They fill a bottle with fuel from a wrecked truck and hurl the Molotov cocktail at the shanty, which erupts into a fireball. Stunned that his friend chose to set fire to the empty office instead, Tim gapes in horror as a blazing figure appears in the hut's window. The human torch and a shocked Tim gaze at one another, searing the memory into the boy's mind. Interrupted by the sound of sirens coming from town, and believing their prank will land them in prison, if not on Huntsville’s Death Row, Tim and Hect think their only choice lies in becoming fugitives from the law.
Armed only with dogged determination and a forehead-slapping sense of naivety, the two boys flee out into the harsh Texas desert. Because of the spoiled lifestyles they've lived so far, the two couldn't be less prepared to face hunger, thirst, life on the road, homelessness and a hidden world of poverty and slums, plus the mean streets of Juarez, Mexico.
Other comments about the book from the publisher and proofreaders include:
"This was a rollicking good tale with plenty of tension but also much humor."
“A biting satire on societal excess and privilege that makes fun of the 1950s and the kids of ‘The Greatest Generation,’ the humorous/adventure novel, THERE IS A GENERATION, expertly reflects the wildness of boyhood, the idiocy of entitlement, and the fleeting nature of boyhood in a way that will entice audiences of all ages.”
“From beginning to end, the fiction novel is a fun romp through lots of adventure and comedic situations with a surprise ending that few, if any, will see coming.”

From Kirkus Reviews
An amusing coming-of-age travel adventure. Two teenage boys see the many facets of 1950s America in Buzzard's caper-filled debut novel. Young Texans Tim and Hect are friends despite being from different sides of the tracks. After they burn down an empty shack, they think that they've accidentally killed a homeless man, so they go on the run. Intending to separately hitchhike their way to El Paso, they each run into increasingly intriguing and bizarre strangers. Tim winds up in Colorado, and then New Mexico, hitching rides with a touring band and the rich guardian of a Janpanese World War II general's son. Hect falls into the path of T.J. and Becca, a father-and-daughter grifter team, who adopt him into their plans. Becca's intense desire to be a movie star eventually leads her to run away with Hect; soon, they meet up with Tim, and the trio try to con their way through Juarez, Mexico, but quickly run into difficulty. Tim and Hect's friendship is threatened by jealousy and resentment, and they soon find themselves in bigger trouble than they could ever have imagined. When they split up once more, Tim must do whatever he can to survive his trip home. The real strength of the story doesn't come from Tim and Hect themselves; their mishaps, close calls, and rich-kid and poor-kid mannerisms. Instead, the book's power comes from the colorful characters that the boys meet on their adventures. The two cut a vibrant swath through the United States and Mexico.

About the Author
A willful, unmanageable teenager once asked a wise old man how to get control of his unruly habits, his self-destructive behavior, and his inability to complete a task. “Do one thing every day for one hour you don’t want to do for someone else,” he replied, “and after thirty days, you’ll be self-disciplined.” Sure enough, the advice worked. That teenager grew into the author. WH Buzzard has had a passion ever since to communicate principles as simple and life-changing in fun, readable stories that edify. A West Texan at heart, the author now lives in Central Texas with his wife, who is one of his most particular editors. When not writing, he'll either be at the pool swimming laps, reading, walking, or thinking up "stretchers," which was Mark Twain's term for exaggerating truisms to make them more palatable.

By Lawrence C. Rochford
WH BUZZARD'S book "There Is A Generation" is not only exceptionally written but a mystery to the last chapter. AWESOME! What is going to happen to Tim and Hect? Their mischievous ways have finally caught up with them and the safe haven they used to have at home is far from them now. I was so intrigued reading "There Is A Generation" that I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the sequel coming out sometime this year. On a scale of 1 - 5, it's a "FIVE" in my book!!! Warning: Wild W H Bill Buzzard done wrote a book!
By R. Miller Houghton
Hi-de-Ho Wild Bill, Willy Bird, BB, Mr. Buzzard Man,
I whittled away on your book. Reading it, as time allowed, on my i-phone and finished it last night. I don't usually choose to read fiction, but this is really a treat. I loved it.
It's a refreshing, souped-up, technicolor, sentimental journey down a youthful, partially imaginary memory lane. You seem to be giving Mark Twain a good run for his money. Is your Tom and Hect, the T and H an intentional play on Tom and Huck?
Your descriptive skills are extraordinary.
Some of us who rode many a mile with young Wild Bill, are amazed, relieved and just plain delighted that you, perhaps the friskiest cat in the barn, survived your youth, to sort out your laundry and get your robe washed. Thank God!
I poked fun at your bio write up telling Susan Park Eiteljorg how things have changed, in that the wild man from our youth now enjoyed taking walks and going to church. Ha. She said she enjoyed much the same, but added maybe that was not so radical in that she did not start out with an earned nick name like Wild Bill. Susan jilted my realization that, oh yeow, I too now especially enjoy walks and church.
Bill, I'm eager to read the sequel next fall. Congratulations on producing an EXCELLENT NOVEL!
My best,
Miller

Interesting, exciting and intriguing
By Amazon Customer
Overall impression: very good. One of the most interesting books I have lately had a chance to read.

"There is a Generation" is a book I really enjoyed reading. A real page- turner which takes you on an exciting journey filled with adventure, mystery and mischief. It is a gripping, suspense filled and fast moving story of two spoiled brats, Tim and Hect, who learn that life on the road is not as easy as it may seem and that not everything in life goes according to plan. As the plot thickens Tim and Hect grow as characters and learn to take responsibility for their actions and appreciate the things they always took for granted. What is more, they learn that trust is a thing which has to be earned and that the people you thought you may always rely on may turn their backs on you when you least expect them to. The story is well developed. Tim and Hect are portrayed in a credible, realistic way. Becca, T.J and the rest of the characters the boys met while on the run seem to fit in quite well with the story. Their portrayal gives a reader a good overview of various people you may come across while on the road. Especially interesting one being that of a cowboy that Tim meets just after he parted ways with Hect. The dialogue is witty and interesting and everyday language used by the characters makes them more real and authentic. Worth reading? Definitely!
