Os Trabalhadores do Mar � a tradu��o portuguesa de Les Travailleurs de la mer, um romance de Victor Hugo, escritor franc�s, publicado em 1866. O livro � dedicado � Ilha de Guernsey, onde Hugo viveu 15 anos em ex�lio auto-infligido.
A hist�ria tem como protagonista um habitante de Guernsey de nome Gilliatt. O personagem que, segundo um 'leitmotiv' comum na po�tica de Victor Hugo, � um marginal social, que se enamora de Deruchette, sobrinha do armador Lethierry. Quando o navio de Lethierry naufragou no rochedo Douvres, um lugar particularmente perigoso, n�o muito distante da ilha, em dire��o da costa francesa, Deruchette promete casar-se com o homem capaz de recuperar o motor a vapor da embarca��o. Gilliatt oferece-se, e o romance passa a narrar as suas aventuras e desventuras, entre elas a luta com um imenso polvo gigante, dentro de uma caverna no rochedo. Os Trabalhadores do Mar � ambientado imediatamente ap�s as guerras napole�nicas, e entre seus temas est� tamb�m o impacto da primeira revolu��o industrial na mencionada ilha.
O romance foi primeiro publicado em Bruxelas, em 1866. A primeira tradu��o para o ingl�s n�o apareceu sen�o em 1887, quando Ward Lock publicou a tradu��o de Sir G. Campbell com o t�tulo ‘’Workers of the Sea’’. O t�tulo atual em ingl�s ‘’Toilers of the Sea’’ estabeleceu-se somente a partir de 1896, com a tradu��o de Routledge.
A primeira tradu��o para o portugu�s, no Brasil, foi feita por Machado de Assis, trinta anos antes de ter publicado Dom Casmurro. N�o que o tema fosse de sua predila��o, mas � �poca Machado ainda n�o era famoso e fez o trabalho porque, em primeiro lugar, dominava bem o franc�s, e, em segundo, porque precisava do dinheiro que o editor lhe oferecia.
Hugo pretendeu originalmente que o ensaio L'Archipel de la Manche (O arquip�lago do Canal da Mancha) servisse como uma introdu��o ao romance, embora o ensaio n�o tivesse sido publicado sen�o em 1883, e que os dois s� tivessem sido publicados juntos no s�culo XX.
