A new venture from the author of the Pendragon Cycle (The Endless Knot, 1993, etc.), though here the fantasy elements-- ghosts, angels, some prophetic dreams--are all but imperceptible. In the tenth century, the Irish monks of Kells have prepared a magnificent illuminated manuscript, its cover splendid with silver and jewels. This Book of Kells will be presented to the Holy Roman Emperor at Byzantium. One of the monks chosen to accompany the gift is pious young Aidan mac Cainnech, who dreams of the Emperor's fabled city and foresees his death there. Off Brittany, however, the monks' boat is sunk by Vikings, and Aidan is carried off to be a slave to the warrior Gunnar in distant Sweden. Through his learning, piety, and quick wits, Aidan catches the attention of the Danish King, Harald Bull-Roar, who nurses grandiose plans to sail south and east to sack Byzantium. But when Harald and his small fleet finally reach the huge, opulent, powerful city, he realizes the impossibility of his ambitions, and only Aidan's knowledge of Latin and Greek keeps the warriors out of trouble. Best Lawhead book to date!

Now that I've read The Iron Lance and Avalon, I thought I'd stop in and read the reviews on Byzantium (I previously reviewed this book on July 27, 1997, but since they are now refering to me only as "a reader" I felt entitled to say something else). I was surprised by a few (to say the least). I honestly think Byzantium is Lawhead's best book ever. I loved Avalon, but it still didn't pass Byzantium as my all time favorite. If you like historical fiction or just want an excellent story with extremely well developed characters - this is the book for you. The important thing is to read the book with an open heart for the powerful message that is portrayed. It is a true story of redemption. I think one of the reasons I loved the book so much is I felt a kinship with the main character, Aidan, unlike I have with any other fictional character. After you read this, read the Celtic Crusade books, beginning with The Iron Lance. These continue the story and you'll see what happened to Byzantium a few hundred years later. Happy reading!

Amazing

At nearly 900 pages this book is amazing in many ways. First, you read that much in such a short time, for once you have picked it up you will find yourself unable to put it down. This book is a fictional retelling of St. Aidan's life. St. Paul's Cathedral in London, Ontario has a St. Aidan's Chapel that has a beautiful set of tapestries depicting the life of this servant of God. St. Aidan died in 651 after serving at home in Iona, among the Gauls - first as a slave and then as a Bishop, and he even visited Byzantium in his lifetime, and the seat of the Eastern Roman Empire.

I was familiar with this church and with the artwork depicting Aidan's life. Yet it was not until almost halfway through the book, that I slapped my forehead and said 'Aidan the monk = St. Aidan'. The book is so craft- fully written that one easily becomes so lost in the story that it did not even click that I knew about this tale.

Lawhead is a master wordsmith, who is most know for his Arthurian legend series, or his Celtic series, yet this stand-alone novel is every bit as much worth the time and attention as his other better-known works. This book was a departure for Lawhead, in that it was written from the beginning as a stand-alone. Therefore, if you do not like getting sucked into a series, where you need to read 4 or 5 books to get the whole story, this book is a great starting point in Lawhead's works.

The story in this novel is powerful and moving. It is the story of a young man who was taken as a slave and later returned as a Minister, and eventually as a Bishop. It is the story of the spread of Christendom, and the story of service. Once you begin you will not be able to put this book down. So be warned!

One of the best novels I've ever read

This was the first Stephen Lawhead book I'd ever read. How could I not have known about him earlier?
"Byzantium" has everything you could want in a story. Suspense, drama, love, heartbreak, despair, elation, and action. The main character is so well developed that it feels like you're experiencing his emotions right along with him.
If you enjoy fantasy or any sort of medieval historical fiction, then you MUST read this book. I cannot imagine that you would be disappointed.

Semioticians began by looking at literature but have gradually applied their techniques to other disciplines, including music. The late Naomi Cumming, violinist and music theorist, based this consideration of the sources of musical expression on her experiences as a performer―with interesting, if rarely surprising, results. Cumming argues from the musical score and from the physical attributes of the performer toward a theory of musical analysis relying on C.S. Peirce's groundbreaking philosophy. It is worth noting, as musical theorists generally do not, that there is no such thing as analysis in music. There is only interpretation, because alternative conclusions about even the simplest music are inherent in its study. Total agreement concerning the meaning of any music is impossible. Although Cumming's arguments are on the whole reasonable, toward the end she veers off into a defense of some of the new musicology's more preposterous practitioners. Although the world of contemporary humanities scholarship is highly contentious, her book would have been better without the polemic. About the Author

Naomi Cumming was a fine violinist and music theorist. She published a host of journal articles and lectured internationally on the philosophy, psychology, and semiotics of music; her article on musical semiotics will appear in the Revised New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. She was a Fulbright fellow at Columbia University, a research fellow in music theory at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Melbourne, and recipient of an award from the Society for Music Theory in 1998.

Great book of Northern Tradition Rituals

This book is full of all sorts of rituals to celebrate the seasons, rites of passages, honor deities, etc.. in the Northern Tradition. As the person that does the intro of the book says this book goes beyond your typical Heathen Blot and/Sumbel, not to knock those rituals-which are just as special. But this book provides so much more for the community. If you just look at the table of contents and see the amount of rituals and all of the different sections in this is one book any Northern practitioner wants it in their library handy. Thanks Raven and to all who contributed their rituals adding their magick to our growing community!

About the Author

Russell S. Chun is Assistant Professor of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations at Hofstra University. He has more than 20 years of experience in visual communication as a multimedia designer for the sciences and as a consultant to the news industry. He is also a veteran educator, previously teaching at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Journalism, where he established and led their curriculum in data journalism. In addition, he served as their Director of Online Education. He has taught at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and at the University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, and was the Department Head of the Illustration program at Sessions College for Professional Design. He sat on the 2015 inaugural Data Advisory Group at Macaulay Honors College at the City University of New York to help build their data science curriculum.

He is the published author of over a dozen technical books, interactive, and video products on multimedia software from Adobe, including their official training manuals.

The Table Of Contents Tells the Whole Story!

I'm going to start with a disclaimer, I wrote one of the articles in the Belly Dance Reader, but I'm not here to toot my own horn. Rather, I'd like to share with you my delight and amazement at the quality and scope of this book. I just got my copy, and it occurs to me that from the description above, you can't really make the most informed decision about purchasing The Belly Dance Reader. But rather than tell you how much I love it, I thought I would give you something even better - the Table of Contents! Just one quick skim, and you will see that this book has an amazing collection of authors from academics to working professionals, this book has a little something-something for every belly dance enthusiast. A good collection of articles by dancers who know their stuff!

The book contains lots of what I wanted, which is, research and strong opinions by folks who have earned the right to have an opinion. Too many of the existing belly dance magazines are little more than belly-dance versions of People magazine, predictably featuring the dancer-du-jour and then filling the rest of the pages with bits of diluted information and rambling articles on topics that have been recycled for decades. This book is more like the late lamented Habibi and Arabesque magazines, capturing the insights and enthusiasms of articulate people who are Names in their field. You won't be bored. I suggest you buy it.

Review for "The Belly Dance Reader" from the editors of Gilded Serpent

For anyone at all interested in the art of belly dance, "The Belly Dance Reader" from the editors of the Gilded Serpent, will enthuse and educate. Its collection of articles, written in part, by many Bay Area dancers, are geared towards the novice, but has valuable insight for both advanced and professionals as well. It offers a variety of articles addressing belly dance basics, such as costuming, make up, and working with a live band, to more educative topics, such as, origins and styles of belly dance, their evolutions, and important discussions about depicting cultures and ethnic groups accurately. Most of the articles are very accessible to the average reader via first person accounts, but this great source also easily forays into a more collegiate realm. With little in the way of media coverage for belly dance, this book is a highly valuable resource. One can gain great knowledge from another dancer's experiences, and that is one of the many great tools offered here. With this in mind, anything written by Najia Marlyz is a delight, and in this reader she has two fabulous articles. "Welcome to Belly Dance!", by Marlyz opens the discussion of belly dance and provides a compelling overview of the subject. Her approach is serious yet comedic, and this I find refreshing. Her article "Are the Stars Out Tonight" is a no no nonsense discussion of music for your "gig", as well as your expectations as a dancer, (will you be paid to dance in the background, or are you a star performer?) and how to achieve your goals.
The article "The Teacher-Student Relationship, A Psychological Point of View", helps us recognize good and bad teacher-student relationships and discusses the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which to sum it up, teaches "just a little bit beyond what the student can already do" so that they may one day be autonomous in their dance careers. As a dancer who's taken classes from many teachers, it is true that finding the best fit will ensure growth in your dance. You want to be praised for your abilities, but also pushed to to better, or you will not feel excited about what you are learning. Conversely, having to be a clone of your teacher only ends in disharmoney. Another poignant article entitled "It Ain't Easy Being the Crone" will strike a chord with many. It discusses one woman journey as a praised dancer to one who has been forgotten. I think that the desire to be a beloved dancer is a dream of many, whether you are professional or not and it was touching to read about this personal experience. In addition to figuring the accuracy, reliability, and validity of source material,"Reading Like a Researcher" discusses how dancers passionate about their art can go beyond dance training and learn"about the cultures, history and evolution of their art...". An article by Brigid Kelly discusses "Latent Orientalism" a phrase coined by Palestinian critic Edward Said in 1978, that reveals how the West's historical "othering" of Arab cultures "...can be used to feed the racism at the discourse's heart". This is an eye-opening article that must be read! The fabulous article by Princess Farhana offers a valuable discussion of vintage costumes and their care. Many more articles worth reading are to be found within this well-organized three-hundred page reader that will indulge, inspire and educate you about the art and culture of belly dance in America and beyond.
