Awesome book, but it really is for total starters

I, being a person who has taken photos for about 5 years, thought that this book would be a good way to fill in any gaps I may have missed on my self-teaching career. Totally wrong. The book is written as if someone has never used a camera before. Upon browsing through the advanced photography edition, the only things I learned after spending $25 on this would have also been covered in the advanced book.

Don't think this is a negative review. No way. This book is freakin' amazing. It's the best beginning photography book I have ever read in my life. I wish I'd had this when I was first beginning. The book, in very simple terms, delves into great detail and explains all the workings of both film and digital cameras, but never once did I get the impression it would be hard to read this for a total beginner. If you want to really be a photographer, but don't even have a camera yet, start with this book once you get one.

For those of you who've got the hang of you're camera and want to get better or see what you've missed, just get the advanced one. It'll fill in the gaps for a better bargain than this book. All this will do is fill in the gaps, but you won't learn more. The advanced book fills in and goes into even greater detail, so much that the people who need this book would probably have a nervous breakdown if they read it.

Okay, that's a bit strong, hahahah, but yeah, the books don't appear to build on each other. It seems like the books are written for people who want to be like a certain photographer. If you just want to take nice pics of family, friends, etc., this book is great. If you eventually want to be a NatGeo photographer, start with the advanced book.

If you've never extensively used a camera (i.e. you've never done anything other than push the button), this is the book for you. If you've used it a lot for over 6 months, get a higher-level book.

Awesome book for beginners

This book is really good for anyone trying to learn photography as it covers various topics from the very beginning to a more advance level. It covers the fundamentals of photography in an excellent way and gradually builds up to more advance topics like creative composition and using the advance features of the camera. It has some good projects at the end of the sections and a great way to dive deeper into the concepts with hands-on experience.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who want to thoroughly learn the elements and build on them.

Transition from Film to Digital

Michael Longford's STARTING PHOTOGRAPHY is for anyone who has every clicked a shutter button. The main emphasis is the transition from film to digital, the differences and similarities. Since Kodak declared bankrupey last week a new edition might be forth coming dedicated to the digital world.
Cell phones outstripped digital cameras for holiday gift giving so even the digital camera maybe a wave of the past.
For excellent instruction on lightening, composition, camera operation, style, etc. this is an excellent beginning.

Great Book for Wargamers

This book is great for wargamers and others interested in two of the key German forces in WW II's Battle of the Bulge. Kampfgruppe Peiper is shown with great detail as to what types and quantities of tanks and troops were at specific places at specific times. The battles at Stoumont and La Gleize are well documented and the writing style will put you in the heat of battle. You will want to supplement this fine book with another Osprey title, The Ardennes Offensive,VI Panzer Armee.

Intriguing Part of the Battle of the Bulge

When I was ten and began building models of tanks from WW2, I wished I could afford an Osprey book based on the vehicle or the battles it fought. The illustrated publisher's quick histories, full-color artwork plates, maps and photographs are unique and entertaining. They, more often than not, provide a great entry point to a particular piece of history (though sometimes the authors have more passion than expertise).

This particular work unveiled an aspect of the Battle of the Bulge that I was not entirely clear on. Hitler commissioned SS Commando Otto Skorzeny to create a special unit to disrupt and gain key points behind Allied lines. What made this unique is that they would pass themselves off as Americans wearing US uniforms and using US weapons and vehicles. What I did not know was that this largely failed and the unit was reconstituted into the overall attacking force which then supported Joachim Peiper's Kampfgruppe. I actually confused the massacre at Malmedy thinking that disguised Germans had carried it off but it was actually forward elements of the regular German force.

The work is interesting as it covers the attempt to hobble together English-speaking combatants from the German ranks while scrounging up captured equipment, how they reshaped the hulls of Panther tanks to resemble M10 tank destroyers, used specific markings so they were not engaged by their own troops, and it debates the cause of the Malmedy massacre. The author also disputes the now famous photography of Peiper supposedly checking his progress against a road sign as not being him (I have seen it referenced in so many works as him that this is very curious). Overall, there is decent detail and great photos.

I do worry about Osprey's format overall. They are pricey publications for their length and they need to rethink their offer in this digital world or may lose relevance.

One of the best Osprey books
By illusion buster
To me his is one of the best Osprey books I have seen the color plates alone are almost worth the price of the book. You get 16 armored vehicles, 4 of the vehicles are German armor disguised as American Armor. The German armor yellow seems too light in the plates but other than that they are very well rendered. You also get 9 very well done German soldiers by Ron Volstad. There is also a nice selection of photos for such a short book (64 pages).

Basic Accounting 101

John Whitely, who is a CPA, has written a practical guide for all users of QuickBooks. Whitely’s purpose is to educate the small business owner in the ways of accounting for a small business. In doing so, Whitely brings forth the ways of correct financial reporting as a way of improving one’s business and guiding that owner in the pitfalls which befall many small businesses.
The book brings forth the common errors of small businesses and then goes forth to show the correct solutions to avoid these pitfalls. In doing so Whitely teaches the use of balance sheet accounts being reconciled on a timely basis. Such things as cash, inventory management and the proper procedures of accounts payable and accounts receivable.
In following these rather simple recommendations a business owner will not only be compliant in the reporting to tax jurisdictions but also will grow their business in a profitable manner.
The author uses the QuickBooks’s model to tell all business owners who are using these programs cannot rely on the financial reporting unless the programs are used correctly. Whitely shows how these programs can be used correctly and if in doubt the owner must consult a CPA or and accounting professional.
The errors and suggestions for correcting these mistakes are solid and based on generally accepted accounting principles. The author explains his thesis in a short and concise forum in basic English that should be required reading for all small business owners.

Superb book! If you use QuickBooks, then I highly suggest this book!

For years, I have taught QuickBooks, used it myself and also worked in an accounting department. What I discovered is that while QuicBooks is an excellent program, many people do not use all the features or use them at the highest level. This book addresses how to more better use QuickBooks. Also, what I like about this book is that it covers the importance of meeting with your CPA. In addition, the chspters in this book cover most business aspects and covers them in a superb manner.

Mr. Whitely covers what I believe every QuickBook user shoud be aware of. If you use QuickBooks, you need to highly consider this book!

There are so many books out there about quickbooks most of them are full of fluff and i always ended up tossing it to the side in frustration.
Not THIS ONE .The book explained the software and how to use it It was explained in a way that anyone could understand and apply it to your work.work. I'm ECSTATIC that i picked up this book!!

"Speaking as one with no math background at all and no formal training in physics, I still found this book fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable. Silverman is something of a polymath, with wide-ranging interests, and he succeeds in bringing together concepts from different fields of study in unexpected but very fruitful ways. He surely must be a wonderful classroom teacher; his enthusiasm for his subject matter is contagious, and to say that his use of language in his writing is masterful is an understatement. …he is always engaging, and never dry. Throughout, his descriptions are a model of clarity, and the precision of his vocabulary in the simplest nontechnical sentences is awe-inspiring in its elegance. This is not a textbook, but any serious student of physics who doesn’t own a copy is missing out on an important book."

Silverman, whose extensive experimental and theoretical work has helped elucidate these processes, presents a clear and engaging discussion of the role of quantum superposition in diverse quantum phenomena such as the wavelike nature of particle propagation, indistinguishability of identical particles, nonlocal interactions of correlated particles, topological effects of magnetic fields, and chiral asymmetry in nature. He also examines how macroscopic quantum coherence may be able to extricate physics from its most challenging quandary, the collapse of a massive degenerate star to a singularity in space in which the laws of physics break down.

About the Author

Mark P. Silverman is Professor of Physics at Trinity College. After earning a Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University, he has pursued a wide range of research interests concerning the structure of matter, the properties of light, and the dynamics of stars and galaxies. He has held the Joliot Chair of Physics at the Ecole Sup�rieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles in Paris, was Erskine Professor at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, and Chief Researcher at the Hitachi Advanced Research Laboratory (then) near Tokyo. Besides numerous articles on physics, Dr. Silverman has written of his educational experiments in "self-directed learning". For relaxation, he enjoys playing the flute and hiking in the mountains.

About the Author
Lee Lanier is a 3D animator, digital compositor, and director. His films have played in more than 200 museums, galleries, and film festivals worldwide. Before directing the shorts Millennium Bug, Mirror, Day Off the Dead, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and 13 Ways to Die at Home, he served as a senior animator in the lighting and modeling departments at PDI/DreamWorks on Antz and Shrek. He created digital visual effects for such films as Mortal Kombat while at Buena Vista Visual Effects at Walt Disney Studios. Lee is the author of Advanced Maya Texturing and Lighting and Maya Professional Tips and Techniques, both from Sybex. He currently teaches at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Hollywood. Great material for those wishing to transition from AE to Nuke

Fantastic book for people like me who know After Effects and want to learn Nuke. And just as good for those who want to transition from Nuke to AE or for anyone who wants to learn both! Lee has done a great job writing each tutorial with an AE version and a Nuke version and then filling it in with all the necessary background information as well. This is a great book for professionals. i highly recommend it!

Another great book fom Lanier

This book will catapult your skills to the next level with all of the fantastic and practical information that it has to offer. I have always been amazed at how in depth Lee Lanier gets with his subject matter. He truly has a gift that few posess. He cuts through the technical blah blah and presents his message clearly and concisely, leaving the reader eager and ready to move into the next chapter with the new found knowledge they possess. Studying under Lee was and always will be one of the highlights of my career.

Digital Compositing, the unsung hero

While not as glorious as 3D animation or as artsy as digital design, digital compositing is the unsung hero of multiple industries. Without it the 3D animation would never make it to the screen and beautiful artwork would never come alive.

As an industry professional and project manager for a video slot design company I use After Effects more than any other program. Our animation departement uses After Effects to bring Illustrator artwork to life with animation unparalleled in the industry. Digital composting programs are very powerful tools, when a client needs animation in a key colored transparency, I use AE effects to quickly give each frame a hard edge dithered to a background and drop a green key behind it all. When used in games you'd never know that it was a simple key colored gif being used as there are no pixelated edges or green halos no matter how intense the animation. With that I'm always looking for new tricks to make my professional life easier.

I'm always blown away by the power and depth of programs like AE and Nuke. This book is written by an industry giant that makes me feel like a mere mortal in terms of understanding the programs. But thankfully he puts, in tireless detail, much of his knowledge in a form that is easy to grasp and quick to reference. The companion DVD is very useful in illustrating many of the featured technique's finer points. There is much I knew the programs are capable of and searching the web for the right tutorials can often be unrewarding. This book outlines many of the techniques I'm looking for and more I didn't even know I needed but are now invaluable.

A must have for any industry professional or student.
