A wide-ranging study of the mechanisms of social control

Chorover's basic argument is that the psych disciplines (psychology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis), do not operate from a neutral position. Instead, they bolster and perpetuate ideas about humanity that are inherently flawed. The fundamental idea that Chorover challenges is that the social stratification of human beings is not biologically pre-determined. While on the surface, this would appear to be an obvious fact, the biological "fitness" of some people over others is very much ingrained in our society. (Just look at our unquestioned belief in IQ tests.) Chorover traces how sociobiological ideas developed from Plato through the Social Darwinists. Then he describes how those concepts were put into effect by prison officials, school boards, state legislatures, and Nazis through policies whose sole purpose was the elimination and control of those who were determined to be "unfit." The "scientific" support used to enact these policies was provided by mental health practitioners, who not only supplied "proof" that certain groups were inherently inferior to others, but spearheaded legislation that resulted in thousands of forced sterilizations and millions of deaths.

While I found Chorover's arguments to be compelling and well constructed, I felt as if he had bitten off more than he could chew. There are a number of philosophical examinations of these ideas (Foucault's Discipline and Punish is among the best) which ultimately do more with the topic. And while Chorover illustrates his points with many well researched examples, he might have made his argument more effectively with a narrower focus.

As an introduction to sociobiology this would be a great place to start. The writing is clear and Chorover's arguments are thoroughly researched. If you are interested Hitler's extermination of mental patients, Chorover's account is second only to Lifton's exhaustive study of Nazi doctors.

Great, but get 2007 edition

Great book to start with in Somali, which is a complex language.
There is a new edition (2007), get that one instead of the 1995 edition. In 2007, it has been packaged with CDs instead of tapes.
if you want to go on in Somali or learn in parallel with a more detailed book, get those great Somali books from Dunwoody Press.

Somali is a language with many features that will seem exotic to most English speaking learners. Accents are based on pitch (rather than stress) and the placement of the pitch accent often determines the gender of the noun. In addition, nouns can flip genders when they are put into the plural. We're definitely not in Kansas any more.

That being said, this is an extremely user-friendly approach to a formidably difficult language. The explanations of the most unfamiliar grammar are very clear and easy to follow. The exercises, which in the beginning lessons are not too difficult, get more challenging as the course goes on, but always remain close to the material already presented.The dialogues start out pretty formlaically- there's a lot of "How are you?" "Come in!" "How's the family?", but they gradually get more interesting, as they follow an English teacher's journey to the Horn of Africa, where he eventually takes up his duties in a Somali town. Do get the CDs, though- a student who knows Arabic would probably find the sounds of Somali pretty familiar, but the stress-tone patterns are likely to be very different and unfamiliar and without a lot of practice it would be difficult to reproduce them acceptably. The author is, incidentally, a scholar of Somali poetry; his website is also worth checking out.

Dr. Jothy Rosenberg is a serial entrepreneur. Prior to Service Integrity, Jothy co-founded GeoTrust, the world's second largest certificate authority and a major innovator in enterprise-managed security solutions. As the company's COO and CTO, Jothy led the company's product development initiatives, developing patents on a series of ground-breaking security products and deploying a secure Web service integrating GeoTrust's reseller partners into the SSL provisioning process. Previous to GeoTrust, Jothy served as CEO and CTO of Factpoint, Inc., a pioneer in the area of content certification and content management. Worthless For Programmers

Agree completely with all of the other reviewers in respect to practical working examples and detailed information. This is nothing more than a high-level overview of documentation and specifications you can easily find yourself on the internet. Look elsewhere (and yeah, I'm still looking myself) for solid information about how to design and deploy WS-* applications.

Good Overview of Web Services Security

This book is a good introduction to the application of security to Web Services and SOA. The authors focus on "message level" security versus "transport level" security, and its application to Web Services. The book explains standards: WS-Security, WS-Policy, WS-SecurePolicy and other current standards at the time of publishing (2004).

However these standards are constantly evolving and this book needs to be updated on a regular basis.

In addition to diving into web services security, it also provides good insight into structure of web services and its design fundamentals. Jen Sincero is a talented writer, and her edgy, irreverent style will be inspiring and motivational to many readers. If you've read other self help books then you probably won't find much that's new here. In fact, it's really the in-your-face tone and humor in her writing that makes this book worthwhile. As for her ideas, I personally found a lot to take issue with. First, she has a very polarized view of spiritual growth that divides our lives in to those that suck and those that are awesome. Maybe that works for young millennials just starting out in life, and if that's the audience she’s g oing for, then great, but most of us are somewhere on a continuum and her assertions that life is either this way or that way are simplistic to say the least. Sincero also uses a lot of highly critical, edgy language to describe people who are struggling or stuck - therefore not as awesome as she is - using words like "lame-o " "suck" "wuss" ...well, you get the idea. This may be mildly amusing the first time around, but it gets old fast and it's not exactly kind to those who may really be struggling. I have to confess that I question a writer who continually references her own life choices and personal career success as a model that the rest of us should follow. There is an exhibitionistic, narcissistic, "look at me", "look at how successful I am" dimension running through this book that is self-indulgent while lacking insight about what success could mean or look like for another person. Read this book for a quick shot of motivation if that's what you need, it's good for that, but look elsewhere for help in developing your own ideas and values about success and purpose. This is the Jen Sincero version and it may not apply to you.

NOT for people with Depression. Be warned. Very triggering.

Okay, listen up. I ADORED this book. I subscribed to everything she said. I was literally prepared to go out and buy three more volumes for my friends.
Until Chapter 17.
About halfway through the book, Sincero begins talking about excuses. Okay, yes. A valuable thing to discuss. People, myself included, make excuses all the time. But she decides to target a set group of people.
People who are clinically depressed. She says, and I'm paraphrasing here, that depression is a comfort because it gives those who suffer from it an excuse not to do anything but stay in bed.
...
And that is precisely when I tuned out. I went from loving everything she said to eye rolling in a matter of seconds.
My clinical depression is not an excuse. It isn't me being lazy. It isn't me snickering as I back out on plans I make with friends. It's me literally being unable to do anything because my disease is keeping me from doing it. There are days where I can't do anything at all. There are days where laundry piles up and my bedroom becomes a disaster and I hide away from the world because I don't think I'm worthy of being seen. There are days where I stop seeing my friends because I feel like I'm a burden to them.
And my friends understand this. They know what I go through and they know that if I need some time to myself to get my brain under control, then it isn't an excuse. It doesn't mean I don't love them. It means that I'm just dealing with negative thoughts and I need to work through it. The fact that Sincero completely misunderstands depression ruined this book for me instantly. Yes, I will admit she gives valuable advice. But once I figured out that her advice disvalues someone like me, I checked out.
Also, her advice...is highly privileged. She says things like, "If you can afford this book, then you're doing okay." "Just buy the car of your dreams!" "If you want to travel the world, stop making excuses and you can." Some people...can't do that. Don't get me wrong, I'm in a good place right now but a year ago? I could barely pay my student loans. I couldn't afford to replace the khakis that were part of my work uniform. I ate leftovers for days on end because my paycheck wasn't going far enough. I didn't blame the universe for this. And I certainly didn't spend beyond my means just because I thought 'the universe owes me and will figure it out.' Sometimes, you're just in a s***ty place in life. I was in a s***ty place for three and a half years. Going out and spending money on a trip around the world isn't exactly sound advice for everyone. I felt like Sincero was speaking to one small group of clients. I didn't fit within that group.
Like I said, she does say some really nice things. She did build me up for quite a few chapters. But she dropped me instantly and it hurt. Depression is hard enough. People with depression shouldn't hear that it's an 'excuse.' I was highly offended and if I wasn't so far in the book, I would've stopped reading altogether.
Needless to say, I'm pretty glad to be done with this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have already shared it with multiple friends. This may be a little in-your-face but the humor hit the nail on the head for me. It's also motivated me to move forward with my life in new ways. Whether she calls you a name or calls it like she sees it, Sincero has done a great job of picking the right tone for me. I had to apologize to the guy sitting next to me on the plane because I was laughing so hard as I dog-eared almost every page.

I loved this book and I trust you will too. Well worth the time spent in reading, if you can just go with her irreverent humor. Get over yourself already!

Seems this is the author's first published book. I think it's a very good first effort. Usual plot line for stepbrother and sister. This time she starts off being repulsed by her brother's behavior but over time she changes.

From the perspective of the psychiatrist

A strange, stimulating journey! A psychiatrist narrates this collection of loosely connected case studies about his patients, involving group therapy sessions, individual sessions, and discussions between the clinical staff about their patients. Most of the chapters begin by introducing new patients who have a bizarre set of symptoms that the doctor and staff try to make sense of, resulting in unusual disorders I’d not heard about before, facts about the patient’s history that helped reveal their symptoms, and a few mysteries that weren’t entirely cleared up in my mind.

The narrator/doctor did a good job of showing what I imagine are the rewards and frustrations of treating psychological disorders, and didn’t shy away from pointing out his own mistakes and biases. It reminded me somewhat of the HBO drama In Treatment, but in a hospital setting and greater focus on how the patients’ physical symptoms played a role in their problems.

I found most of the stories sad by themselves, but by the end of the book it had risen to a more hopeful note, as it becomes clear that few people come completely “cured.” The better standard is whether people can improve enough to return to the live they want to live. Interesting to hear the thoughts of the doctor about what I assume are true case studies. Definitely recommended!

As an independent consultant I have embraced this notion of always sharing as a way of improving how we get things done, innovating and frankly – being in the world. She illuminates a myriad of options for using networks of communication to share our work. I highly recommend you check out this book – it is instructive, exciting, practical, and fascinating. Everyone who cares about raising the bar for performance, training, outcomes, and practice should order it and read it NOW.

There's awesome...then there's this...

"Share is the new save"

As simple a concept as it is, this just doesn't seem to stick with people. We, in training and development, kind of had an inside track on this concept, but even we are still learning to embrace it (or, rather, to let go of our work, allowing others to see it). All this said, this book explains, in both great and wonderfully simple detail, Showing and Sharing your work: How this not only can work, but how it can benefit you more than keeping your work in silos or stashed away like some hermit/guru on a mountain that people have to go on a pilgrimage to find (chicken sacrifices not included).

The book itself is easy to follow and, really, a fun read - It's graphically well done and gives the eyes plenty to do (as opposed to the standard black text/white page we've all become begrudgingly accustomed to). But I think one of the greatest aspects of this book, as compared to so many others, is the constant use of case studies and real-life examples. So often, we accept theory as fact and just go with it because it's our occupational dogma, of sorts. Jane provides example after example of not just why SHE thinks we should share, but how others HAVE shared, CONTINUE to share, and BENEFIT from sharing.

Really, there's not enough good I can say about this book...I would recommend it to not just anyone in Training & Development, but anyone. It's a concept we all can benefit from, regardless of profession, craft, or trade. Sharing works, and this book proves it.

Social Media, Crowd Sourcing.. whatever you call it Show Your Work is amazing PD.

Last August I went to #EdCampWestTexas in Abilene, Texas. An EdCamp, if you haven't been to one, is an unconference -- a free gathering of educators serving the K-12 space. I learned so much about educational technology and learning/teaching strategies in a few hours. The downside was I had to drive around 500 miles round trip to make it happen.

Show Your Work is like a bunch of EdCamps crammed into a paperback book. I actually have both versions: the paperback edition and the Kindle edition. The paperback looks and feels like a softbound coffee table book. It's colorful and looks beautiful. The pleasure comes from opening it and browsing until something catches my eye.

I have to admit that it took me a while, several weeks in fact, to go through the book. This isn't because it's difficult to read. It's not. It's because, for me, the best way to use Show Your Work is like a cookbook. When, in the course of my instructional design or project management work, I need to a fresh perspective on how to approach something -- ideation basically, I browse the book. The watershed #aha moment came when I got to the part about how to make an RSA-like video. You know, it's the video technique where you see a hand holding a pen rapidly sketching whilst a normally-timed narrative guides you. It's on page 66. Teacher Paul Bogush and his students showed me how it's done. It was easy to do. I've made a couple since and even improved on their process so it better fits my workflow.

Why'd I get the Kindle version when I have the paperbound version? Because the Kindle version fits better on my iPad. It's instantly available when I need inspiration.

You really need Show Your Work. It's given me fresh ideas on doing stuff. I'll still go to EdCamps. But the difference will be that I have more to share thanks to having read and used the book.
