"When the essence of the shadows and darkness empowers you, yet you don't feel evil, you are good-dark," writes Konstantinos (Vampires; Summoning Spirits), as he calls believers to the practice of Nocturnal Witchcraft. Konstantinos writes for people primarily within the Wiccan tradition who feel at home with the night and lunar energies. He reiterates throughout this manual, however, that to draw one's strength from the energies of the night is not at all the same as intending to do dark deeds. In fact, this guidebook might be regarded as a fundamental Wiccan primer save for the fact that Konstantinos turns to night-based rituals and primarily, but not exclusively, to the pagan pantheons of Egypt, Greece and Sumeria to harness good human desires to the yoke of such deities as Hypnos (Night Personified), Pasht (Dark Moon), Nanna (Full Moon), Kali (Protection), Persephone (Descent and Rebirth) and Annubis (Underworld and Death). His ceremonial instructions are clearly described, but the book's chief flaw is that readers must recognize themselves as "good-dark." They are imprecisely beckoned with not much more to go on than "Do you dress in black? Favor silver jewelry? Does being surrounded by the shadows, by the essence of the night, appeal to you?" For those readers self-identified with the night whatever that means his text may offer just the words they have been waiting for; others will find it as obscure as its subject matter.

Too much hype, little content. Most of wich being info you can find in just about paganism 101 book. As for the 'dark' aspect of it, its little more than changing to a few darker colors and worker with a few darker gods. You want info on the darker apsects of paganism, go check out

Moises Kaufman and his Tectonic Theater Project have written a play documenting the aftermath of the savage killing of Matthew Shepard, including the perspectives of both friends and strangers: The Laramie Project. This innovative theatrical composition, structured not in scenes, but in "moments," addresses the various issues relating to the tragedy of Shepard, a young gay man whose murder has since become a symbol for America's struggle against intolerance. Kaufman's approach is actor-based, as opposed to text-based; a side-effect of this actor-based approach is that in print form it seems as though something is missing. However, the play promises to move the reader with its authentic portrayal of a small town facing a terrifying event.

Prepare Yourself

For tears and tears and tears... I caught this off of my sister's bookshelf and she had told me about it years ago, but I never looked into it until I was on a month's vacation up north with her. Thought I'd span the little big out for a bit, but the damn thing entranced me. I could NOT put it down. I didn't WANT to! The tortured souls explored in this play are exquisite and emotionally compelling. I cried long and hard throughout the entire thing. The best part is when the doctor is describing Aaron and Matthew being in the hospital together... such a difficult read due to the emotions, but an overwhelmingly fantastic true life story about what happens when a town realizes it's own sins.

Worhty Read prior to the DVD

I bought this to read prior to watching the DVD of the Laramie Project, to compare, and was glad I did. It carry's as much if not more of the drama and weightiness of the subject matter, the killing of Matthew Shepard in 1998.

An easy and quick read, it helped me identify the characters later on the DVD, and though in stage format, doesn;t read like a novel. I finsihed it in one afternoon, and if this horrific incident still concerns you, this is a good way to understand how it affected so many in a sparsly populated "city" in a huge mostly unpopulated state.

Hate knows no boundaries, but how it affected Laramie, is well done with an unusual idea. It took great courage to do this project, and shouold be more widely read, if not required reading, for schools.

Controversial?

We purchased this play because my son's High School principal decided not to allow the theater teacher to put it on at his school without even bothering to read the play before making this decision!!! Moreover, the principal essentially threatened to fire the teacher if the issue was pursued. We wanted to share this play with as many people as possible after that incident and so have been loaning it to friends, relatives, other teachers, anyone willing to read it. It is truly an important work, putting a human face on the people of Laramie, Wyoming. What happened there could happen anywhere, and we not only shouldn't, but can't, hide these difficult truths.

Must Read For Any Student of Modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

This is a rare and candid glimpse behind the scenes of one of BJJ's most creative and accomplished instructors. It will be especially interesting to anyone contemplating the path of teaching this art (or any martial art, really) for a living.

Most people know Professor Dean as a highly accomplished martial artist, with black belts in BJJ, Judo, and other Japanese jiu jitsu styles. This book not only tells some of that very interesting story, but offers a look into the other facets of his life, particularly his numerous creative pursuits. The reader will quickly understand that Roy's artistry extends well beyond the martial domain. With a background as a professional audio and visual artists, it is no mystery why his DVDs were so refreshingly watchable and broke new ground in the BJJ instructional circles. I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that Roy's work in BJJ instructional material forever changed the landscape of that genre.

As mentioned above, this book should be especially interesting to those who desire to pursue a career as a martial arts instructor. Roy's story highlights many of the unique and often unforeseen challenges involved in making a living teaching BJJ. One would be well served to read this book and learn from the very unique perspective offered in it.

GREAT CONTENT AND GREAT STORY. EDITING NEEDS WORK.

I've been a "fan" of Roy Dean for years for most of the reasons put forth in the forward to his book. My own martial arts path, though not nearly as concentrated as Roy's, has taken me from the early 1980s to now, from Judo to Tae Kwon Do, to Kickboxing, to Wrestling, and finally to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I have just read the teaser chapter available online, and in the interest of making an honest review of Roy's excellent story, I can't help but point out the number of grammatical errors. Most people won't notice the erroneous uses of the contraction "it is" (it's) instead of the proper pronoun "its", nor likewise the mistaken use of "too" instead of "to", but for the story of a man whose life has been spent in the pursuit of excellence, it is somewhat of a stain. Again, content-wise, I love it. But, just as the oh-so-very-true saying about competition ruthlessly exposing the holes in your game (and I still get queasy-nauseated at tournaments), I guess being published does the same :-) Keep up the great works Roy, you are an inspiration!

but couldn't wait to recommend it to friends

I am almost done with the latest book by Roy Dean, but couldn't wait to recommend it to friends. I was deeply moved by the Martial Apprentice and his new release Becoming the Black Belt, is absolutely beautiful. The foreword by Nicolas Gregoriades was amazing on its own and I can not think of a more fitting compliment to one another.
Mr. Dean' written work is hypnotic and meditative, paralleling his presence on the tatamis. He gracefully describes many aspects of his life that have shaped his vision and practice. With eloquence and respect he even addresses religion and cultural practice. That chapter alone was worth the price of the download.
There is no prerequisite training for this book. One does not need a working knowledge of jiujitisu, judo, jujutsu, or any martial art to appreciate the text. This thoughtful work by a top practitioner is motivating and inspiring to say the least.

things sure have changed

Back in 1967 when this book was firs published it was considered to be prettty racy stuff. My parents owned a copy but I was never allowed to read it. Finally after all these years I saw the new edition and bought it. Things certainly have changed. Rachel and Trudy were lighthearted, funny girls who got into madcap adventures that no sane flight attendent today would dare try.
Back in the 60s stews had to be single, attractive and thin, today as anyone can tell you flight attendents don't have to be any of these things. Sex seemed to be a game both men and women were playing. Today romance on the job isn't much fun at all. Back then flying was still fun. Today it's more like Dante's Inferno. Rachel & Trudy occasionally dealt with pervert passengers, and often with drunks and rotten kids but the whole phenomenon of air rage was stil unknown.
Some of the observations Rachel and Trudy made about certain types of male passengers were considered beyond the pale back in '67, today we don't even give it a second thought. Check out their comments on page 237 and you'll see what I mean. One more thing I noticed about this funny book. It couldn't be written today. The whole mind numbing political correctness movement would've made an editor cut out whole chapters. The book will make you smile and it's like a historical artifact to boot.It's a peep into a swinging lost world.

This book is FICTION and NOT actual memoirs!

I got this as a gift from my amazon wish list this Christmas thinking it was non-fiction. While I enjoyed the book I was disappointed when I learned that Coffee, Tea or Me isn't the actual memoirs of two real people as told to the author. There was never a Trudy or Rachel; these are fictionalized characters! This is acknowledged by the author in the forward of the reprint addition; he stated that he made up the two stewardesses based upon two he met one evening who had some funny stories. He worked in the industry so he created Trudy and Rachel based upon those two ladies, his experiences and stories he had heard.

Amazon has this book listed under "non-fiction" but the publisher, Penguin, lists it as fiction on their own site.

If you are looking for a tell-all from two real stewardesses from the sixties, you will not find that in this book. If you want an entertaining read that takes a lot of creative license about fictional characters in that period, then this is for you.

Nowhere Near True

Having been a real airline Stewardess for a real airline in the 1960's I knew this book is total fiction. I had never read it until the recent reprint. There is no way that it is true. No airline would put up with a lot of stuff in that book. The stewardesses could not have met all of those celebrities and men from different countries. I could go on and on but suffice it to say that it is quite obvious that the book is totally made up by Donald Bain who is a ghost writer. However for this book he is a fiction writer. It is funny and entertaining, and totally ridiculous. It doesn't reflect at all the real world of airline stewardesses in the 1960's. If you realize it is fiction you might enjoy it.

Good textbook

Well written and easy to follow. The exercises sprinkled throughout the book make sure you are learning the content as it happens instead of just skimming until the end of the chapter. You really need to get the online access code to go with the book if you want to get the most out of it.

Author Kelly Cooper gives us a brief but eye opening awareness of the brilliance of Stephen Key and his brilliant ideals.
For the individual or group that is ready to bring their ideal forth to be revealed this book will be a great time saving resource.
This book explores if the ideal of someone would be marketable and worthwhile of moving forward. How to negotiate contracts,
proposals, royalties, etc... are discussed within this book. A person's ideal is their most valuable resource. With this one ideal, it
could springboard a person into a wealth of opportunity.
There are additional resources within this material that the reader would find helpful.

What a sham!! Do not buy!!

This is in no way a useful summary. I do not write reviews but this book was such a waste of time (luckily it didn't even take 15 minutes to read from cover to cover) that I felt it necessary to save readers from wasting 3 dollars. Read the back summary of the actual book, you'll benefit just as much. What a joke.

The making of England

With the main text being only 75 pages, this is a very short Very Short Introduction, but an excellent one nonetheless. It covers the years 450 to 1066, but with just a cursory glance at events before 600. It is fact-packed and readable, with good illustrations, including two very useful maps. You should certainly read Roman Britain: A Very Short Introduction before this, and ideally, The Celts: A very Short Introduction, before that. This particular book leaves the reader with a strong sense of how much the Anglo-Saxon age shaped England's landscape and culture. If you want a broad overview of British history, this may be all you need for this period. If you intend to delve deeper into the era, this is a great place to start.

A good overview - informative and accessible

I am a big fan of the idea behind the Very Short Introduction series, and the way in which they provide information in an easily accessible manner. John Blair's "The Anglo-Saxon Age", while not the best example in the series, is certainly up there.

The book is set out in roughly chronological fashion, tracing the political development of England from the earliest settlements in c.450 through to that famous date of English history, 1066. Where it becomes appropriate, Blair takes the opportunity to bring in developments in society, religious culture, and trade and the economy - and it must be said that this structure works very well. The book contains plenty of illustrations to give flavour to the information. There is a list of suggested further reading at the back, which is commendable, although it could be more extensive considering the size of the subject concerned. Similarly, although there are maps to provide context, just two isn't quite enough to show the complex political and territorial changes.

To cover the entire Anglo-Saxon period - a whole six centuries - in just 90 pages (only 75 of which are the main text) was always going to be a tall order. Compare this with "The Crusades: A Very Short Introduction", which weighs in at 150 pages, a better length which allows for a more in-depth study of the subject matter. As a result "The Anglo-Saxon Age" remains only an overview of the subject, although a very respectable one. It is more easily digestible and certainly less daunting than one of the standard histories, such as "Anglo-Saxon England" by Frank Stenton (although that might be more useful for a student of medieval history). It might be worth also considering James Campbell's "The Anglo-Saxons", or Michael Wood's "In Search of the Dark Ages" as good places to start.

At the price this book is being offered by Amazon, it is nonetheless a good buy for the casual reader or for someone encountering the Anglo-Sazon period for the first time. Recommended.

Handy brief guide

John Blair does something in this book that I had thought impossible: he handles over 600 years of history quickly and easily. Well under 100 pages, this book is not only "very short" but very understandable.

Blair begins with some background on Roman-occupied Britain, but the story begins in earnest with the Roman withdrawal and the invasions of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes from mainland Europe. From there Blair describes the development of Anglo-Saxon government and culture, giving lots of time to the Viking invasions and English attempts to fight back.

Overall, this book is a very good, fast-paced (only 75 pages!) guide to the Anglo-Saxon age. Blair covers all the major topics and even has some time for cultural development, including describing the impact of the English outside of England. The book tends to focus more on the later Anglo-Saxon era, from Alfred the Great to the Norman conquest, but this is really more of a matter of how sparsely documented the early years of the period are.

Recommended to anyone hoping for a quick guide to Anglo-Saxon England.
