A very thorough and useful book

This is _the_ book to acquire if you are planning to make vegetable oil based soap. There's a lot of information packed in this book. It presents all the elements of soapmaking very systematically, and explains the simple chemistry and logic behind the recipes and techniques. It specializes on the best ways to make vegetable oil soap -- which can differ from animal fat based soap. I'm a beginner. I made my first batch last night and it is happily solidifying in the molds as I write. I would buy this book in addition to whatever other soapmaking books you feel inspired to buy, because it covers just about everything and is a really good reference. It includes a large appendix of suppliers and a reassuring table of what to do when things go wrong. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a good description of what "tracing" looks like -- tracing being the sign that your soap is ready to pour into the molds. But, none of the other books I read did either. It's subtle, and I think it's the sort of thing you learn to recognize after you've made a couple of batches. Note that each of the eight basic recipes makes 40 bars of soap, so be prepared to share with friends!! If the amount of info in this book seems a bit overwhelming, beginners might also want to consider picking up a copy of Ann Bramson's book.

some basic misinformation problems with these books

People either hate these books by Cavitch or they love them,and there's little room in between. Her book is a very valuableresource for technical info on oils/fats and their properties, and for basic ideas for recipes, however, if you follow all of her instructions you are missing out on some basic facts and better ways of doing things (i.e. you do NOT need to use GSE, just don't superfat your soap so dang much; USE a stick blender, the author probably had a batch trace too quickly and/or seize and thus swore off the stick blender; you do NOT need to use oxides nor are they "natural" colorants, they're metal-based and synthesized in labs; don't swear off the use of tallow or lard, and don't rely on the author's stats on them either; don't mistake her saponification table for potassium hydroxide as being one for sodium hydroxide, this will lead to disaster). You don't need to weigh your water either. These aren't serious procedural snafus, but the author obviously picked them up early in her soapmaking and has not let go of them. You will need GSE if you follow her recipes exactly and don't recalculate the lye, because her recipes produce soap that has enough excessive fat to make it go rancid after some months.

GOOD AND NOT GOOD

I'm starting a small business and I needed a book to help me with making a lot of soap in one time. The recipes usually make about 30-40 bars in one shot. If you're buying this for personal use I'D PASS. On the other hand if you're looking to sell soap go for it. Now the problem is there are NO pictures showing the final product! I like to see what i'm making and I'd like to see if mine looks the same when I'm done. They basically have little drawings if that's what you want to call them..not to helpful it that area. It's an O.K. book....it gives you the list of things you need to make soap and that's what I basically bought it for...

Time for a sequel, it's THAT good!

This is my 3.5 year old sons FAVORITE CHILDRENS BEDTIME BOOK! The "characters" are amazing and make this the best "fantasy"-style children's book yet written. I don't know of any other book quite like it, I have bought several copies because this book makes an amazing gift for friends with kids too! If you enjoy video games or fantasy this is also a great read in general, but I actually don't let me son play any video games, however board games and Magic the gathering cards are common place in our household!

Only problem is...when you are done, you will be drooling for a SEQUEL! Get on it Ben Hatke!

Love for Hatke books remains strong in our house

My 2.5 yr old loves every Ben Hatke book and this one continues the streak. There is always many parts in his books where we can get excited reading together. For this one, we love to count the shields in the dungeon where the goblin lives, we love to say no no no don't chase the goblin on the many pages where he is being chased, we love to point out the dragons and then ask where they went the next time we see their cliff setting, etc. great adventure book with a happy ending and a message of love.

If you or someone you know is in the Halloween spirit, plays D&D or simply likes monsters, this book is for you. It's a cute tale about being true to your friends and finding out that everyone's liked by someone.

The art is adorable, with a certain Jim Henson quality to the character designs. The artist knows how to create a scene in every page but makes sure that it's not too cluttered as to distract younger eyes from the focal point of each illustration.

It changed my life!

Last year I went out and bought every book I could find on marketing my art. Some of them were pretty good but this book just shone! It was so clear and funny that I decided to try to do exactly what the author said. I've had two shows of my work already and four more lined up for next year. And it was fun!

An awesome book when you're ready to leap!

Cay Lang is a working visual artist, whose works have been shown internationally, and an accomplished teacher. The book is based on an actual 6-month long class she designed for other students ready to leap.

From the preface: "As my art career unfolded, from showing in nonprofit spaces, to national gallery representation and publication in books and magazines, and eventually to being seen in international museums and galleries, I picked up more pieces of the puzzle. By 1990, I had been teaching photography to university students for some time, and every new batch of students would ask me, 'How can we get our work seen and sold?' The answer was too complex for a ten-minute conversation, or even a semester's length class, so I started the Taking the Leap program, condensing ten years of information picked up in the trenches into an intense six-month practicum."

"The class was designed to be effective. I didn't want to create yet another situation where students dutifully attended a class, took great notes, and then filed them away somewhere for future use. I wanted things actually to happen for the students in a measurable way. I wanted them to experience the thrill of metamorphosis from art student to professional artist within the time line of the class itself, and I wanted to be there to hear them come bouncing in to announce that they just sold their first piece, or got their first show, or won an award. I decided that the class should meet weekly for no less than six months, limited the enrollment to twelve, and interviewed the students ahead of time to determine whether or not they were ready to market their work. The class turned out to be amazingly affirmative, with a high percentage of the artists going on to international art careers."

This is a fantastic book that outlines what you need to do to set up and follow through as a visual artist. Every chapter is like a checklist. You can always use it as reference material later, but the book is great whether you read it for the 1st time or 51st time. Bravo, Cay Lang!

A Tremendous First Step for Grasping German!

The Langenscheidt Picture Dictionary is a terrific way to get started in learning German. Just as a child typically learns to speak by first learning the names of things around him or her, this dictionary allows one to learn the German words for hundreds of common items, plus several action verbs. With attractive picures accompanying each word, the dictionary provides a fun see-and-name means of learning.
A friend and I have used this book for hours at at time to quiz each other's elementary German skills and it has been a real benefit to progressing to more advanced levels in the language.
At the very least, this book would be a fun and easy tool for anyone to use as a tourist, helping them communicate the basics on a trip to Deutscheland!

Carol Suraci’s life has been a love affair with language and books. She spent time in the publishing world before switching to advertising, where she worked in both account management and human resources. What a fun and exciting read!

With a combination of vampires, romance, and a battle between good and evil, you won’t be able to keep from turning the pages. You’ll be cheering for Mallory and Hayden the whole way through, and before you know it, you’ll be wishing Hayden had waited and searched for YOU for centuries! The characters are truly wonderful, unique and relatable. I highly recommend this book. I guarantee you will read it more than once!

Exquisite depiction of creatures hungry for lust and speculation

I am not usually a science fiction reader, but this novel really captivated me since the very beginning. The monologues felt real and increasingly connected me with its characters. It has an overall dark aura yet soft edges. NYC is like a partner in crime. The city holds this story together and becomes the perfect scene to portray creatures hungry for lust and speculation. This has to be the best vampire story I've come across. It will test your senses. I also enjoyed its pace and unexpected twirls. I'd say it's a great choice for travelers as the read is intriguing and energizing. I got my hands on it on a long-haul flight and it kept me hooked since the take off. I'm so happy I got it and would definitely recommend it!

Forever Midnight is a fascinating story about good vs evil and immortality. The love story between Hayden and Mallory is so absorbing that you cannot put this book down.
As we are drawn into the evil that lurks around them, you are deeply moved by their plight. The author's interesting and vivid writing compels us to keep on reading. I loved this book and I recommend it to all readers.

Polymers occupy a very speci?c place amongst anticorrosion techniques. Polymers combine good chemical resistance with impermeability to di?- ent media and unusual deformation characteristics. The main principle of their application as anticorrosion means is the creation of a tight barrier that insulates metal machine parts or constructions from corrosion agents. The advantages of polymers allow the creation of such a barrier at minimal cost,providingprotectionoftheworkingmachinesfromcorrosion,combining their manufacture with preservation and decreasing the cost of anticorrosion. This is one of the main reasons why world production of polymer materials increased by almost 50% in the past decade.

The development of polymer composites containing inhibitors of metal corrosion is an important endeavour in modern materials science and technology. Corrosion inhibitors can be located in a polymer matrix in the solid, liquid or gaseous phase. This book details the thermodynamic principles for selecting these components, their compatibility and their effectiveness. The various mechanisms of metal protection – barrier, inhibiting and electromechanical – are considered, as are the conflicting requirements placed on the structure of the combined material. Two main classes of inhibited materials (structural and films/coatings) are described in detail. Examples are given of structural plastics used in friction units subjected to mechano-chemical wear and of polymer films/coatings for protecting metal objects against corrosion.

Really excellent, must have reference

This is a really great book about Visual Studio 2015, by far the best on the market; I know because I also bought the other two books available in December 2015.

This book tells you EVERYTHING about Visual Studio for beginner to pro, from Professional and Enterprise version info, for new user to experienced professional who is upgrading to 2015; unlike competitors books that don't go into sufficient detail. It has whole chapters on unit testing, documentation, templates, setup for various application types and database types, plus much more. It is an amazing book. At over 1200 pages with smaller type, you probably won't read straight through but pick the pieces you really want.

Highly recommended, must have book. Start by sitting down with it at your computer to set up Visual Studio 2015 to best meet your needs.

Visual Studio is a great tool that even has a quality free community version, and now supports many open standards, not just Microsoft products. Buy this book and download Visual Studio 2015, you won't regret it.
