It is the official course material
By Douglas Brown
Easy to read, well illustrated. It doesn't really matter whether you want to read it, if you are pursuing ASA certification! Otherwise it's a fairly useful reference although it doesn't cover much new ground. An enormous amount material appears to have been lifted directly from Chapman's, but perhaps explained in a slightly more user-friendly manner.

Helpful and readable

Thank goodness. Clear and well illustrate guide to cruising. Often cover same material as the 102 book "Cruising Fundamentals" but this book is vastly better written and contains clear illustrations.

New to sailing? Buy this book after you purchase "Sailing Made Easy", but before any other book out there.
By P. Zenk
The ASA manual for its ASA 103 sailing course. As with all ASA books, packed with relavant information. Tip for those new to sailing who would like to learn more about the basics, cruising, and possibly live- aboard....I would buy the three ASA books before any other. Sailing Made Easy for basic sailing (ASA Keelboard 101 manual), Coastal Cruising Made Easy for basic cruising instruction and information (ASA 103 manual), and Bareboat Cruising Made Easy for more advanced cruising (ASA 104 manual). Wait to purchase all of the other sailing books out there until you read these.

A Fantastic Coffee Table Book, Even for Non-Architecture Fans.
By Alexander Lucard
I enjoy Legos a lot. Even as an adult nearing middle age, I still buy the occasional set and put them together. One series I've never gotten into though is the Architecture line. They're too small for my taste and I've never found them to look too much like the actual buildings they are modeled after. They just come off cheesy to me, especially the ones with "water." However I love coffee table books and especially design oriented ones, so I decided to give this one a try.

I have to say, I am really glad I picked this up. Normally my reviews aren't this gushing, but I loved everything about it. The book is high quality in terms of both substance and style. It comes in an extremely durable slipcover with glossy matte finish and Lego artwork. The cover of the book is an inversion of the slipcover design, as it is shadows/silhouettes of the Legos compared to artsy photos on the box. I have to admit, this is the best slipcover for an item I've seen outside the ones Nippon Ichi makes for its premium edition videos. Color me impressed.

The book itself is equally awesome. Not only do each of the twenty-two offerings in the Lego Architecture line get their own section, each one has a plethora of interesting information and wonderful photos taken of them. Take Big Ben, which is pretty much my standard for why I don't think the Lego Architecture line is very good. You get tons of pictures of the complete piece, each from different angles, along with footnoted and tidbits about the design process. You also get photos of the real structure the Lego set was patterned after. There is a side by side (well page by page) comparison of the real thing with the Lego version, and also a history of the building and its chief designer(s). So not only do you learn a lot about what went into the Lego version, but you also walk away with having learning something about the real historical piece. I loved that! each entry in this visual guide follows the same format and it really is a joy to read.

Besides the sections on the specific Lego sets, you also get a timeline for the series, profiles of the Lego staff that designed these sets, information on the creative process and a look at the different bricks used in all of the sets.

Although I probably won't buy any of the Architecture sets showcased in this collection, I really did learn a lot from this book and it was as fun to read as it was to look at. I walked away with some more respect for the Architecture line and I'm sure I will flip through this again from time to time.

Beautiful
By Dan Lebryk
For the true Lego Maniac, this book is incredible. It is essentially a huge beautifully photographed catalog of the Lego Architecture series. Just about every model available in the series is included in the book.

On a pure coffee table picture book standpoint, this is a nice book. The paper is heavy weight. In DK style, the photographs of the full sized architecture are gorgeous. First opening of this book is awe inspiring, the book is held in a thick heavy cardboard slipcase. The book is bound in cardboard with glossy paper glued over the cardboard. The binding is tight and allows the book to be laid flat.

There is a bit of background text about the creative process and profiles of the artists that designed these models. The core of the book is each model. The formula is the same for each of the 22 models. A close up picture two page spread of the model. On the next page the design artist's perspective on what was critical with the building. The facing page is a picture of the whole model. The next page pair is a breakdown of the construction with key elements called out. And the last pair of pages DK shines the most, beautiful pictures of the original building and some text describing the building.

As a catalog and casual coffee table book, this is outstanding. If I were in the market for one of these kits, this would be the best place in the world to make that purchase decision.

As a Lego Maniac that has built a few of these kits, the information in this book isn't much more than what is included in the Lego kit box. If you already own a number of these kits, this book is pretty but redundant.

Because Lego Architecture kits are priced at a huge premium over standard Lego kits, this book is a good choice as a catalog. As a dream book, it also succeeds. This is probably not the book for somebody that has collected a number of the Architecture kits.

Great book

The condition of what I got is bad. It seems like what I got is not brand new, but used one.
But the contents of this book is really great, my boy like it, he enjoy Legos a lot.

Park City: New and Selected Stories (Vintage Contemporaries), by Ann Beattie

Thirty-six stories--eight appearing in a book for the first time and a generous selection from her earlier collections--give us Ann Beattie at stunning mid-career.

Emotionally complex, edgy, and funny, the stories encompass a huge range of tone and feeling. The wife of a couple who have lost a child comforts her husband with an amazing act of tenderness. A man who's been shifting from place to place, always finding the same kind of people--sometimes the same people in various configurations--tries to locate himself in the universe. An intricate dance of adultery brings down a marriage. A housekeeper experiences a startling epiphany while looking into her freezer one hot summer night. The long, humorous roll of a couple's "four-night fight" finally explodes into happiness.

Beattie has often been called the chronicler of her generation, and these stories capture perfectly the moods and actions of our world since the seventies: people on the move, living in group houses, smoking too much dope; people settling down, splitting up, coming to terms.

Margaret Atwood said of a previous collection that "a new Beattie is almost like a fresh bulletin from the front: We snatch it up, eager to know what's happening out there on the edge of that shifting and dubious no-man's-land known as interpersonal relations." The new stories have the same power. A family secret is revealed in a strange and puzzling act that becomes understood only many years later. In an AIDS ward, certain questions take on special significance. A hostile eight-year-old and his father's live-in girlfriend move in fits and starts toward dtente.

In prose by turns laserlike and lyrical, these memorable, evocative stories authentically recall the details and feelings of their time. But the truths revealed are--as in all fiction of the first rank--timeless.

Amazon.com Review
Ann Beattie arrived on the literary scene in the early 1970s, publishing the first of her carefully understated short stories in the New Yorker and becoming something of a legend for the speed with which she worked--22 stories in a year, and a complete draft of her first novel, Chilly Scenes of Winter, in three weeks. Time has not slowed Beattie down--her fifth collection, Park City, follows hard on the heels of her fifth novel, My Life, Starring Dara Falcon, providing a kind of symmetry to her output. Lest you think Beattie is some kind of perpetual writing machine, however, be forewarned that only 8 of the 36 stories in this collection have not been previously published in book form; the rest are selected from earlier collections, thus offering an interesting survey of how the writer has changed--and how she hasn't.

From the start of her career, Beattie has been compared to Cheever and Updike, chroniclers of the chilly middle classes, and also to Raymond Carver, master practitioner of that school of literature known as minimalism. Beattie's stories seem smaller than life in some ways, depending as they do on an accretion of detail to round out her characters' lives. In her world, as in our own, there are no grand epiphanies, no moments of blinding realization. Instead, her characters muddle through their days in a series of small events that culminate in a whisper instead of a bang. In "Going Home with Uccello," for example, a woman on holiday with her lover in Italy watches him interact with a woman in a museum gift shop and realizes his true purpose for the trip is not to convince her to make a commitment to him, but rather to "persuade himself that he loved her so much that no one else could be a distraction--that no other woman could come between them." In "What Was Mine" another nameless narrator--male, this time--claims his inheritance from the man who had been his widowed mother's lover and the only father figure he'd ever known: There was sheet music inside: six Billie Holiday songs that I recognized immediately as Herb's favorites for ending the last set of the evening. There were several notes, which I suppose you could call love notes, from my mother. There was a tracing, on a food-stained Merry Mariner place mat, of a cherry, complete with stem, and a fancy pencil-drawn frame around it that I vaguely remembered Herb having drawn one night. There was also a white envelope that contained the two pictures of one of the soldiers on Guam; one of a handsome young man looking impassively at a sleeping young baby. I knew the second I saw it that he was my father. Understanding, such as it is, comes in the quiet moments, in the exchange of glances in a gift shop, or the transposed captions on a couple of photographs.

Over the years, Beattie has continued to map the psychological and emotional territory of the urban, the educated, the neurotic middle class. On those occasions when her stories are set outside of New York--Vermont, Park City, Utah, Italy--her characters are generally from there, or at least from another large city such as Los Angeles. Beattie's prose has always been crisp, smart with just a touch of the smart aleck to it--on occasion she can be remarkably funny. But there's a chilliness in her stories that discourages the reader from getting too close, or investing too much. Her often nameless narrators tell their tales in the modulated tones of well-brought-up people for whom not wearing one's heart on one's sleeve is a religion. And yet in their spare revelations of loss and disappointment, their timid essays to the borderlands of hope, more often than not these characters do get under your skin. Depending on your tolerance for ambiguity, they can either irritate or captivate. Beattie's work tends to play to the intellect rather than the gut. For readers looking for a shot to the cerebellum, she satisfies; for those who prefer their fiction warm-blooded, Park City might be a trifle too cool. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly
Remarking in an author's note that the same first names keep popping up in her work, Beattie (My Life Starring Dara Falcon, 1997, etc.) writes that she "intended no linkage from story to story?though there are a few in-jokes, of course." In fact, her stories are the in-jokes of an era. Since they first appeared in The New Yorker in the 1970s, her early chronicles of aimless youth, ambivalent love and fractured families have lost none of their wistful appeal or satirical bite. Neither has their author, as the eight new stories published here prove. To Beattie fans, her themes will be familiar. If the new work has a certain emphasis, it's surrogate parenthood. In the hilarious "Cosmos," a schoolteacher resists marriage to a man she met through a personals ad and takes guilty pleasure in exaggerating the foibles of his hyperactive, destructive little son for the amusement of her Japanese pupils. In the title story, a woman spends a week at an off-season Utah ski resort with her half-sister Janet "more or less looking after Janet's boyfriend's daughter, Lyric (fourteen), who is in turn looking after Janet's child, my niece, Nell (three)." The narrator's efforts to take care of the two girls?thrown temporarily together, like their self-centered parents, more by bad luck than design?are convincing, touching and (as always in Beattie's short fiction) funny. Re-reading the older work, one wishes that the 36-story collection were more comprehensive (one misses such gems as "Fancy Flights" or "Friends"), but this is a small complaint about a generous, very welcome volume of stories from one of the most influential masters of the form.

From Library Journal
The title story of this new collection from Beattie (My Life, Starring Dara Falcon, LJ 5/15/97) includes exquisitely drawn, completely believable portraits of three women ranging in age from three to 14 to 31. It is as beautiful, fully realized a story as this reviewer has ever read. "Dwarf House" is another satisfying tale that brilliantly evokes the collective pain of a family's dealing with one of its members being a dwarf. It successfully follows the dwarf's stuggle from childhood to adulthood, and the ending is both welcome and persuasive. Not all the stories are as satisfying; some have indeterminant endings close with a significant-sounding sentence or phrase that the reader is left to ponder?or not. But the best of Beattie's stories should please any reader. For all fiction collections.

These stories are glittering gems.
By A Customer
This book was my first encounter with Beattie, and I must say that I was completely taken with her prose and the ease with which she provides us glimpses into her characters' lives. As a reader who revels in the chance to read writers who are technical masters of the short story form, Beattie did not disappoint. What I did find disappointing was that the stories became repetitive in theme and style so that powerful effect of the excellent ones ("Vermont, The Burning House, "Where You'll Find Me") was ultimately diluted by some of the other weaker stories. Finally, it is nice to read a female author who is unashamed to write about the human heart without an artifial device like southern charm or supposed female wackiness, both of which can sometimes be a distraction and detraction from a story

Kind of Blue
By Cort McMeel
When I think of Miles Davis, the word virtuoso comes to mind. When I think of Ann Beattie's short stories, the music from Miles' classic album "Kind of Blue" plays in my head. Spare, taut, controlled, yet so emotionally stripped down as to be poetic in the truest sense. This is fiction that rings like a tuning fork, humming inaubibly to the fragile souls that inhabit these works. Short stories like "Vermont", "Burning House", and "Where'll You Find Me" resonate with despair and, yet, at the same time tremble with a glimmer of hope. Bawdiness and loudness of voice, a brawling style, does not prevail in these quiet tales. But then again Ms. Beattie isn't trying to be Hemingway. She in her own way moved the short story beyong Hem and Cheever and even Carver, taking it to a realm where readers and writers are innured to listen.

Medusa's Hair: An Essay on Personal Symbols and Religious Experience, by Gananath Obeyesekere

The great pilgrimage center of southeastern Sri Lanka, Kataragama, has become in recent years the spiritual home of a new class of Hindu-Buddhist religious devotees. These ecstatic priests and priestesses invariably display long locks of matted hair, and they express their devotion to the gods through fire walking, tongue-piercing, hanging on hooks, and trance-induced prophesying.

The increasing popularity of these ecstatics poses a challenge not only to orthodox Sinhala Buddhism (the official religion of Sri Lanka) but also, as Gananath Obeyesekere shows, to the traditional anthropological and psychoanalytic theories of symbolism. Focusing initially on one symbol, matted hair, Obeyesekere demonstrates that the conventional distinction between personal and cultural symbols is inadequate and naive. His detailed case studies of ecstatics show that there is always a reciprocity between the personal-psychological dimension of the symbol and its public, culturally sanctioned role. Medusa's Hair thus makes an important theoretical contribution both to the anthropology of individual experience and to the psychoanalytic understanding of culture. In its analyses of the symbolism of guilt, the adaptational and integrative significance of belief in spirits, and a host of related issues concerning possession states and religiosity, this book marks a provocative advance in psychological anthropology.

Sacred or crazy - a matter of cultural knowledge
By Jon C. Tevik
What is most rewarding with this book, is the cultural/cognitive analysis done by the author. Obeyesekere explains how the women with matted hair (in an Indian province) obtain their particular status in a society brimming with mythological images and tales very much pervading daily life. Very Freudian in his approach when recording the life stories of the women (allowances has to be made for this) and subsequently how these trajectories have formed the women, the author demonstrates how the women are able to explain what has happened to them by sharing the society's knowledge of the religious myths. By drawing on these myths, and their images, the women can manipulate and approriate these images when accounting for how they got their matted hair, and consequently the sacred character of their being. So long as their account is identifiable and compatible with commonly held knowledge of the religious myths and tales, they are plausible and deemed valid by the community. Should a tale prove unidentifiable with the body of myths and characteristica of spirits, one may very well be described as plain ol' crazy. I feel that the fundamental argument of the book is how intimate knowledge of the mythological content of the culture, and the successful manipulation of this, leads to an elevation of social status, whereas in western societies, the long since (by and large) eradication of these beliefs (in lack of a better word) will most certanily lead a person with similar symptoms destined for a diagnosis of mental ilness or -unstability. This is the strongest argument in the book, one that is firmly supported by the analysis, notwithstanding the reservations one might have towards traditional psychoanalisis. It's not a light read, but getting into the cultural analysis might be a sweet reward.

grossly interesting, an inspiring read
By eleanor maidment
Having read Medusa'a Hair as part of my University coursework, I was very impressed, Most of the books we are asked to read are fairly dull but this book really captivated me. Obeyesekere's personal opinions on the subject of matted hair in Sri Lankan women attending the festival at Kataragama was facinating. He has a great way of putting across his own opinion and whilst he makes a great bridge between Weber's and Freud's philosphical standpoints, he very effectively shows his position acroos to the reader. This may seem like a difficult book to comprehend but once read will be greatly admired

Interesting, but not a book for the beach
By A Customer
An interesting read, but not for the casual reader. This text is a pretty advanced look at the religious beliefs and practices held in a number of Eastern countries. The writer becomes fascinated with the practice of matted hair exhibited in a number of female priestesses. He likens this matting to Medusa's hair and begins to wonder at some of the Freudian psychosexual rationalizations that could be put into play to explain the phenomena. Obeyesekere explores his theory through a number of case studies and eventually comes to what will undoubtedly be a very startling conclusion for the Western eye. I believe this book would be best suited for small discussion due to it's advanced academic nature.
