The Devil's Only Friend (John Cleaver), by Dan Wells

John Wayne Cleaver hunts demons: they've killed his neighbors, his family, and the girl he loves, but in the end he's always won. Now he works for a secret government kill team, using his gift to hunt and kill as many monsters as he can . . .

. . . but the monsters have noticed, and the quiet game of cat and mouse is about to erupt into a full scale supernatural war.

John doesn't want the life he's stuck with. He doesn't want the FBI bossing him around, he doesn't want his only friend imprisoned in a mental ward, and he doesn't want to face the terrifying cannibal who calls himself The Hunter. John doesn't want to kill people. But as the song says, you can't always get what you want. John has learned that the hard way; his clothes have the stains to prove it.

When John again faces evil, he'll know what he has to do.

I'd love to see this character on TV or in the movies, but for now, I'll have to settle for the printed word
By Frank Errington

Admittedly, I have never read the original trilogy of books in the John Cleaver series. One of these days I will need to rectify that. I'm also happy to say, it's not necessary to have read any of the other books to enjoy The Devil's Only Friend.

Reminiscent of Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, John Cleaver is a bit of an anti-hero, quick-witted with a sharp tongue, and an urge to kill. An urge that he controls in an unusual way. It's these tendencies that make him good at his job, working for a secret government kill team, using his gift to hunt and kill as many monsters as he can.

The Devil's Only Friend works very well as a stand-alone novel. The writing is crisp and clear. The action fast-paced and intense. I was barely through the first chapter when I realized I was going to love this book. Saving mankind is deadly serious business, but there's just a perfect dash of humor to break the tension once in a while.

Nothing quite goes as expected in this story and by the time it's over, John Cleaver finds himself asking, "Have I been wasting my time trying to be the good guy, when good and bad don't even make sense anymore."

I'd love to see this character on TV or in the movies, but for now, I'll have to settle for the printed word and am eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.

Available in all formats from a variety of retailers, The Devil's Only Friend is published by Tor.

Highly recommended.

Can't wait to see what happens next in this dark saga
By Terry Weyna
This review contains spoilers for the first JOHN WAYNE CLEAVER trilogy.

John Wayne Cleaver is a seventeen-year-old boy who wants very, very much to kill people. Lots of them, one right after the other, in terrible, bloody ways. Paradoxically, because he longs to do that, he has been taking extraordinary lengths to avoid becoming a serial killer. His struggles were related in a trilogy consisting of I Am Not A Serial Killer, Mr. Monster, and I Don’t Want to Kill You. That trilogy showed how John’s efforts to avoid acting on his murderous desires ran smack into his discovery of demons, and the very genuine need to kill those demons to save the people he loved. Alas, John was not able to save the people he loved most. As this trilogy opens with The Devil’s Only Friend, John’s bitterness at his failures is on open display, even as he works with a special FBI unit dedicated to rooting out and destroying demons.

Brooke Watson, a girl John’s age who has been mentally broken by her contact with the demon called Nobody, accompanies the team, though she is not precisely a part of it. Her company tortures John, for in essence Brooke is possessed by a demon John killed named Nobody; Brooke retains that demon’s memories, and her mind was so warped by the possession that she still believes she is Nobody. Yet John faithfully spends time with Brook that goes far beyond what is necessary to do his work. The mind of Nobody insists that the Withered (as she calls the demons) are evil, and is eager to assist John and his team to get rid of them, so she’s a tactical advantage for the FBI. They keep Brooke in a secure hospital facility wherever they set up operations.

As the story opens the team is in Fort Bruce, a small city in the Midwest, where they are collecting data on two demons living there: Mary Gardner, a demon who works as a nurse in order to drain the health of others in order to keep herself healthy; and Cody French, who never sleeps, and must download his awareness into another human in order to get some rest — which drives the human mad. Alarmingly, just after the team completes one operation, Brooke reveals that yet another of the Withered is in town. Those who have read Next of Kin will recognize this character, but the team comes to the immediate conclusion that its members are being hunted by the demons. And although they reached that conclusion for the wrong reasons, they happen to be right.

The team unravels the puzzles of the demons, their powers, and how to kill them in this novel, giving it some of the characteristics of a mystery. And the team battles the demons with everything they’ve got, so it’s also an action novel. Both aspects of the novel work well, and they work well together. The pacing is excellent, as the team’s actions go from a seemingly simple operation to a more difficult one to one that seems all but impossible, leading to a climax where everything, including everything that happened in the first trilogy, comes into play. The only criticism I have is that the law enforcement personnel involved have absolutely no notion of the law, and especially of how due cause for a search is established. Perhaps Wells ought to consult with a lawyer or a police officer for his next novel.

What most intrigued me about this novel, and what lends it its bleak darkness, is John’s inner life. John narrates the novel, so he tells us how the mysteries are solved and watches the action (he’s usually not allowed to participate, for several reasons), always with a quickness of thought and a bleakness of aspect. John’s time with demons has not cured him of his desire to hurt and kill animals and other humans; in fact, he has plans for how to kill everyone on his team. He wrestles with his own internal demons, battles that are harder fought than any of those against the outer, physically real demons. Wells delves deep within the brain of a sociopath struggling not to commit sociopathic acts because he knows they are wrong, even as he longs deep within himself to see the blood, to feel the knife entering flesh. “I’m trying very hard not to become a serial murderer,” he tells another member of the team, and we are witnesses to that internal battle. (One of the scariest moments in the novel is when John actually does kill someone: “It was exactly like I’d dreamed it,” John tells us, and then goes on to explain in detail. It’s stomach-turning.)

The ending is both triumphal and bleak, and it’s hard to imagine where Wells will go from here. He has written a book that stands on its own, not dependent on the trilogy that went before and not truly needing the books that are going to come after. I can hardly wait to see what comes next.

Start of another trilogy
By Mr. Jared C. Serra
This series continues to amaze me. With every release I am afraid that the author Dan Wells will find the need to make John more likable. Don't get me wrong, I like John. I like him because of how twisted he can be. The anger and rage boiling in his character always makes for an entertaining book.

This one does feel quite different then the other three. I thought the first three were mystery horror novels. This one felt more Fantasy then anything. Still a heavy dose of mystery and horror drive the plot. There is a good deal more world building about the demons that inhabit Johns story. They make this book feel more Epic than the previous entries.

If I had to nitpick I would say that to many of the supporting cast are a tad bit cliched and one dimensional. There is enough with them to get a good feel but that was the weakest portion of this story to me.

Still it is John that I read this for and he doesn't disappoint! Spending time in his head can be frightening, but it is never dull. Throw in a great plot that kept me guessing all the way to the end and you have another great John Cleaver book. I know the author is hard work on Book 5 right now and I cannot wait to see what future plans he has for John!

Why Information Grows: The Evolution of Order, from Atoms to Economies, by Cesar Hidalgo

What is economic growth? And why, historically, has it occurred in only a few places? Previous efforts to answer these questions have focused on institutions, geography, finances, and psychology. But according to MIT's antidisciplinarian Csar Hidalgo, understanding the nature of economic growth demands transcending the social sciencesand including the natural sciences of information, networks, and complexity. To understand the growth of economies, Hidalgo argues, we first need to understand the growth of order.

At first glance, the universe seems hostile to order. Thermodynamics dictates that over time, order--or information--will disappear. Whispers vanish in the wind just like the beauty of swirling cigarette smoke collapses into disorderly clouds. But thermodynamics also has loopholes that promote the growth of information in pockets. Our cities are pockets where information grows, but they are not all the same. For every Silicon Valley, Tokyo, and Paris, there are dozens of places with economies that accomplish little more than pulling rocks off the ground. So, why does the US economy outstrip Brazil's, and Brazil's that of Chad? Why did the technology corridor along Boston's Route 128 languish while Silicon Valley blossomed? In each case, the key is how people, firms, and the networks they form make use of information.

Seen from Hidalgo's vantage, economies become distributed computers, made of networks of people, and the problem of economic development becomes the problem of making these computers more powerful. By uncovering the mechanisms that enable the growth of information in nature and society, Why Information Grows lays bear the origins of physical order and economic growth. Situated at the nexus of information theory, physics, sociology, and economics, this book propounds a new theory of how economies can do, not just more, but more interesting things.

Review
Finalist for the 2015 Hayek Book and Lecture Prize

“The concept of information is necessary to make sense of anything that is not a boring featureless mass, including life, mind, society, and value. Why Information Grows lucidly explains the foundations of this essential concept, while creatively applying it in exciting new ways. It is filled with interesting ideas, and a pleasure to read.”
—Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of The Language Instinct and How the Mind Works

“Mr Hidalgo succeeds brilliantly in bringing his complex subject to life. His book is full of nuggets, from memorable phrases to interesting metaphors.”
—Economist

“Written in an accessible and entertaining style.... Hidalgo has made a bold attempt to synthesise a large body of cutting-edge work into a readable, slender volume. This is the future of growth theory and his thought-provoking book deserves to be widely read.”
—Financial Times

“Contains some innovative thinking about what drives growth that could help us to navigate the turbulence of the ever more interconnected global economy.”
—Nature

“Thought-provoking...Well written and accessible, the book is full of interesting ideas that deserve to be read and discussed.”
—CHOICE

“An impassioned argument for the advantages of an information-centric view of economic growth, and for understanding the different capacities of nations to provide solutions to human problems... Hidalgo persuasively demonstrates the value of this approach by placing the ideas firmly in their historical context, both in information theory and in physics... Hidalgo's perspective on economic wealth is wildly fresh and creative. Physicists will enjoy reading about familiar ideas in new ways, and will also find value in learning how these ideas can be applied fruitfully in areas seemingly far away from physics. Economists and other social scientists will find new concepts ripe for profitable use.”
—Physics World

“Anybody interested in the future of mathematical theory in economics should read Cesar Hidalgo’s book Why Information Grows. There are many things to like about this lucid account of the evolution of our scientific understanding of information. One of the most important may be the simplest. It illustrates what it means to think like a physicist.”
—Paul Romer, founding director of the NYU Stern Urbanization Project

“A mind-stretching, unconventional book that draws on information theory, physics, sociology and economics to explain economic growth and why it occurs in some places, not all.”
—Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

“Hidalgo invites us to understand the economy in an entirely different way.... [A] novel, holistic take on the dismal science.”
—Kirkus Reviews

"Why Information Grows shows us how humans infuse information into matter, making it more valuable than gold. Hidalgo's work brilliantly spotlights the true alchemy of the twenty-first century and its impact from economic complexity to national competitiveness."
—Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, Distinguished Professor and Director of Northeastern University's Center for Complex Network Research, and author of Linked

“Economies are built out of information. This has been true from the Stone Age to our knowledge economy today. Yet until Csar Hidalgo’s breakthrough book, we have not had a deep account as to how and why this is so. This exciting, important book is a major step toward a twenty-first century theory of growth.”
—Eric Beinhocker, Executive Director, Institute for New Economic Thinking, University of Oxford and author of The Origin of Wealth

“This beautifully written and carefully researched book may set in motion a paradigm shift in economic thinking. Blending deep theory with detailed data, Hidalgo demonstrates that countries grow, firms prosper, and individuals thrive when they enmesh themselves in diverse, talented networks that produce complex physical order, i.e. information. Why do economies grow? Because information does.”
—Scott Page, Professor of Complex Systems, Political Science, and Economics at the University of Michigan and author of The Difference

“The diverse set of perspectives that Csar Hidalgo brings to the eternal question of growth—from economic development theories to big data mining engines to elegantly crafted visualizations—underlies the central thesis of Why Information Grows: diversity. Including many diverse perspectives will ultimately create maximum complexity and chaos, which ultimately creates growth. Hidalgo makes a powerful case for the importance of creativity and imagination in our society's ability to make information—and economies—grow.
—John Maeda, Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and author of The Laws of Simplicity

A beautiful, readable introduction to how information grows through computation and how it shapes society
By Bobby Norton
Csar Hidalgo has written an important and ambitious book. His professional background in physics, network science, complex systems, and economics, as well as his personal experience in international travel, friendship, and fatherhood, gives him a unique perspective on the unifying theme across these diverse concerns: Information. "Why Information Grows" presents the relationship of energy, matter, and information in anecdotes, stories, and intuitive examples. Insights begin flowing right away: Like temperature and motion, information is incorporeal, but it is physical: Information is physical order, like the difference between a shuffled and sorted deck of cards.

This conversational approach allows the key concepts to emerge quickly and naturally. To briefly summarize the arguments:

The universe is made of energy, matter, and information. Information emerges spontaneously in out-of-equilibrium systems, like the swirls of milk in coffee. This information would be short-lived if not for the ability of solids to allow information to endure and be recombined with other information into more complex forms: Energy is needed for information to emerge, and solid matter is needed for information to endure. Information grows since matter can compute in an iterative process that uses the information embedded in solids to transform energy into different solids and new information.

Computation happens in plants or bacteria, but the human brain is the ultimate incarnation of the computational capacities of matter. We organize our brain and our society to beget new forms of information, deposited in objects and language. These allow us to distribution information, both knowhow and knowledge. What's the difference between the two? We know how to walk, but most of us don't know the biomechanics of how we walk. Some rare individuals know both, and can combine that information with robotics and prosthetics to build new creations like artificial limbs.

Humans have the unique ability to do what Csar poetically describes as "crystallize information". We create objects from our imagination and from the collective fiction we develop with others through expression and language. We eventually hit limits of what we can compute and manifest on our own, forcing us to work with others to form a distributed computer...a social network with an emergent collective intelligence. This human network leads to economies embedded in social and professional networks that predate and constrain economic activity.

The inequality of the wealth of nations is an inevitable consequence of the inequality of the distribution of large networks of knowledge and knowhow. Csar then leverages his previous in-depth work on economic complexity to make four important testable predictions:

• Simpler economic activities will be more ubiquitous.
• Diversified economies will be the only ones capable of executing complex economic activities
• Countries will diversify toward related products
• Over the long run (> five years), a region's level of income will approach the complexity of its economy, as approximated by product exports

Society is a collective computer, augmented by the products we produce to compute new forms of information. The social and economic problem that we are truly trying to solve is that of embodying knowledge and knowhow in networks of humans. This evolves the computational capacity of the human race, and ultimately helps information grow.

Csar certainly could have made this a highly mathematical treatise suitable for publication in Nature or the PNAS. Indeed, for the more technical reader, the book's 25 page appendix provides copious references that back up the author's claims. I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes insight into the works of figures that were new to me like Ilya Prigogine, Francis Fukuyama, and Wassily Leontief.

The book ends with a powerful moral imperative: "We worry about money and taxes instead of owning the responsibility of perpetuating this godless creation: a creation that grew from modest physical principles and which has now been bestowed upon us." Csar comes from and contributes to a community of thinkers and makers that learn from the past and live in the present from which a better future can emerge. By describing the importance of information from atoms to economies, he implicitly bids the reader to do the same. "Our world is different from that of early hominids only in the way in which atoms are arranged": Here's to ever-increasing information, our ability to work peacefully together in society to achieve it, and to the beautiful complexity that information and augmented computation brings.

This is a wonderful book. The way it introduces information and entropy ...
By Santiago Ortiz
This is a wonderful book. The way it introduces information and entropy is refreshing and clear. I don't think I ever read such an intuitive explanation of entropy, (at least a one that goes beyond entropy as disorder).

It also provides an interesting and new perspectives of what economy is, and how to measure it. More than just being an alternative approach it's quite complementary, and specially convenient for the times we live in which we have a lot of data about all the data we have.

Yes it's also a book about data,… and it doesn't mention "Big Data". Thanks for that Csar. It's also a book about technology and yet the word barely appears (Csar instead uses a very poetic name the reader will find beautiful and appropriate).

And yet the book has gaps (for those gaps I first 4★ed the book but then I thought contents were good enough and that I had a very pleasurable reading). And the gaps are not small:

One of the main concepts introduced in this book is that of economic complexity, an index that can be applied to regions, industries or companies. And yet the author doesn't give a definition of it (he gives a hint, enough to show that the index is difficult to define in bare words). Well, he could have used an appendix to provide a definition!

Then the author claims this index predicts future rates of growth (in conventional economic terms). Yes, it shows how that correlation exists between the economic complexity index measured for countries in 1985 and present rates of growth. Bu that's just one correlation, it's far from enough. Ok, he believes on his index,… thus the natural next thing to do is to show current values of economic complexity for countries, and thus give us a prediction of future economic growth (and with that, an option of testing the prediction). Mysteriously enough the author doesn't provide that information either.

(Note the negative synergy of the lack of a formal definition of the index, and the lack of the current data… specially when claimed that the index predicts our future).

Finally, I felt there's also a gap between the first part, in which he introduces information and entropy, and how both are in essence physical (solid) phenomena and not just mathematical, and also how matter computes; and the second part in which he jumps to a bigger scale, that of societies. It's somehow difficult to understand how both parts connect. At the end of the book he gives a very good summary, which certainly helps establishing the connection. Strangely enough, it's actually outside the main body of the text, in the acknowledgments (yes I read them, they actually have interesting ideas and stories), in which Csar more clearly manifests the link:

"As I […] tried to escape the rhetorics of deprivation, guilt, prosperity, optimization, equilibrium, and wealth, I learned that economic growth was nothing more than an epiphenomenon of a larger, more universal, and more relevant phenomenon. This is not the growth that captures headlines and political agendas, but the growth that makes possible the existence of life and society— even if we ignore it. This is the growth of physical order, or information. Soon I had to accept that information was what it was all about. At this point, I could no longer see the economy in terms of income, regulations, and agents. The economy was a mundane manifestation of something deeper."

Gaps or no gaps, I thoroughly recommend this book.

Great Essay
By Jorge Alonso
I began the reading of this book with much skepticism, as I consider myself an orthodox economist. However, I enjoyed every page of it.
The author describes the basic principles of how information grows, at any level, to transcend to humans - a species particularly able to create and store information.
Next, the author provides compelling arguments on how information and its complexity is what lies behind old fashioned aggregate factors of growth and development (physical and human capital). In this new approach to growth, the most developed of societies will be those able to support largest, and more complex, networks of persons and firms to support the manufacturing of a manifold of products.
A very pleasant reading for everybody as it does not require any specialized knowledge

A sure to be block buster
By D. L. Zeller
This book is well written and just draws you into the story. I had to fight my 16 year old daughter for the book. Everytime I went to go read the book it was missing because she had stolen it back to read. The author has a way with detail that gives you a visual that can not go wrong. This book covers the emotions, cheering when the good guys win, laughing when your sure they have lost their minds, and seeing yourselve right there on the first tee when the morning starts. This book is writen so well that I can't help but wonder when the movie will be made? What happens next, and what a great idea for a TV series. The author is gifted, this is not your everyday golf book. Look out Tin Cup, Chasing The Gator will soon be hot on your golf shoes.

A very fun read
By Shivas Murphy
This is a funny book. I swear some of these characters hang out at my local municipal course. This would be a great gift for any golfers you know who have a sense of humor. It may not help your game but you will find yourself laughing out on the course as you recall situations from Chasing the Gator.

A fun read
By Golfing Engineer
This book takes a fresh and entertaining view the "happenings" that occur at local public golf coures.
We who play these coures will recognise the zany characters that appear page after page. Those who don't visit public courses can enjoy this book without the hassel of making tee times.

A Fun Read Highly Recommended

Steampunk wonderworld romance.
By angela mortimer
This is a well written book with a very good plot and wondrous descriptions; but there is much more to say that just that.
Being a artist I've always loved the Steampunk movement, even in the early days before it had a name and people were just welding bits of old cars together, I had a desire to learn to weld a few bits together too. Now it's stupendous, remember the London Olympics and diva Annie Lennox in full regalia and the machines to die for. I've also a very nerdy interest in gearing - a handsome set of complicated gears from the industrial revolution sends me into just as much as swoon as does a Fra Angelico or Picasso.
Added to that we have Atlantis; a small child with a large imagination and a comic book, shows this mythical land being destroyed because of a huge crystal harnessing the power of the sun and that's the reason for the destruction of their world. Well who knows the truth of it, but most say there is always something behind the old myths, sometimes we even find out. Those legends about us not being the first technological advanced humans on this earth have been hushed a little, my favourite is that Antarctica's ice has obliterated all of an early first great civilisation-who knows and who knows if we will go the same way?
However there is much more than fantastic descriptions of a fabulously designed city of Atlantea and the dangers of the surrounding wilderness. It is also a beautiful love story between a clever Greek priestess and a Sea Captain from an Atlantis obsessed with genetic purity; a Nazi like wonder-world. If the early Greeks were brilliant philosophers and scientists then the later Romans were the best engineers and loved gearing....so logically....
If you just want a delighful love story between the wondrous Helena and the brave mariner Klaus, or if the old myths make you wonder what might have been, then I can thoroughly recommend a read of this fascinating book. Great ending too and I can't wait for the next book and I hope a certain dreadful lady gets her comeuppance.

From Artisan to Worker: Guilds, the French State, and the Organization of Labor, 1776-1821, by Michael P. Fitzsimmons

From Artisan to Worker examines the largely overlooked debate over the potential reestablishment of guilds that occurred from 1776 to 1821. The abolition of guilds in 1791 overturned an organization of labor that had been in place for centuries. The disorder that ensued - from concerns about the safety of the food supply to a general decline in the quality of goods - raised strong doubts about their abolition and sparked a debate both inside and outside of government that went on for decades. The issue of the reestablishment of guilds, however, subsequently became intertwined with the growing mechanization of production. Under the Napoleonic regime, the government considered several projects to restore guilds in a large-scale fashion, but the counterargument that guilds could impede mechanization prevailed. After Bonaparte's fall, the restored Bourbon dynasty was expected to reorganize guilds, but its sponsorship of an industrial exhibition in 1819 signaled its endorsement of mechanization, and after 1821 there were no further efforts to restore guilds during the Restoration.

Review
"By placing the debate between advocates of the guild system and proponents of industrial mechanization in its long-term context, Michael Fitzsimmons has produced a richly documented study that is remarkably wide ranging and insightful. Better yet, From Artisan to Worker places economic considerations at the heart of politics and demonstrates that state policy formulation was as much a product of pragmatic responses to circumstance as ideology or political culture." - Robert Alexander, University of Victoria

"From Artisan to Worker emphasizes how many continuities, and also contingencies, lay behind the apparent principled radicalism of revolutionary gestures. All this makes for a contribution of the first importance not only to the history of the French Revolution but to European industrial and commercial history in general, not to mention that of economic thought." - William Doyle, University of Bristol

"This book examines the labor market in France across the turbulent years from the Bourbon monarchy of the eighteenth century to the Restoration after 1815. Much of Michael Fitzsimmons's earlier work focused on guilds and corporate privilege, and the present study builds on his understanding of how the guild structures worked. Here his lens is wider - the transformation of the French workplace from the artisan economy of the Old Regime to the labor force of the modern era. In turn he examines the end of corporatism, the economic deregulation of the French revolutionary decade, the bitter faction-fighting of the Napoleonic years, and the return to regulation that came with increasing mechanization after 1811. The time frame he selects is convincing, and the book offers useful insights on the economic impact of the Revolution and Empire." - Alan Forrest, The University of York

"Corporations rather than markets were the model for organizing work and consumption in eighteenth-century France. When the National Assembly abolished guilds and economic regulations in 1791, it unwittingly opened up a mass experiment in the creation of new social, economic, and legal institutions. Michael Fitzsimmons's groundbreaking work illuminates how French society responded to that challenge. Fitzsimmons brilliantly describes how the political context of the Revolution shaped the emergence of new kinds of institutions to coordinate social and economic behavior and new ideals of social and economic liberty. The work revises our understanding of the relationship between work and revolution and offers real insights into the many paths of economic modernization." - James Livesey, University of Sussex

"...a well-written addition to a welcome new approach to economic history, much needed in university courses." -Pamela Pilbeam, History

"Fitzimmon's meticulous account of how successive legislatures discussed and dismissed the recurring popularity of guilds is a model of political history...[his] book is an important account showing how the French government supported the birth of the industrial revolution before reliance on institutions of the Old Regime had been put to rest." - Daryl M. Hafter, American Historical Review

"...this book makes a significant contribution to the historiography on work in modern Europe." -Christine Hayes, Journal of Modern History

"In this thoughtful study Fitzsimmons has provided an excellent analysis of the transition away from guilds and the resulting shift from eighteenth-century to nineteenth-century workers." -Michael R. Lynn, Canadian Journal of History

"...an original contribution to the history of work that deserves a broad readership." -European History Quarterly

groundbreaking scholarship
By musicfan
It is rare to find a responsible presentation of facts concerning industrialization in Europe. Rather than supporting the more commonly held idea that mechanization was inevitable and necessary for progress, Fitzsimmons offers a different perspective. In the hands of the upper bourgeoisie, and a French government in the grip of ruthless competition with Britain, industrialization became a calculating method of redistributing wealth and power. Fitzsimmons does not use bully tactics to posit a hightly personal opinion. The scholarship is indepth and cross-referenced (even the footnotes are invaluable). I recommend this to anyone, really, but it crucial for students studying the 18th century in any capacity.

An especially good Bible commentary
By Israel Drazin
Nahum Sarna, the general editor of the JPS Commentary series, who passed away just recently, was one of the greatest biblical scholars of the twntieth century and the mentor of many other scholars. He had a keen mind, was extraordinarily friendly to everyone, and was greatly admired. It was a pleasure to talk and learn from him.

Sarna offers his readers a great deal of information in this volume. Besides commentaries on every verse which draws from close to a hundred ancient and modern sources, Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and non-religious, he introduces each section with a brief scholarly and interesting summary, over fifty in all. He also includes some three dozen excurses on such subjects as angeology, the meaning of the akeda, the moral issue of Jacob's behavior, and the name Israel.

Examples of his commentaries include comparing the opening of Genesis with the Mesopotamian Emuna Elish, which shows that the initial verse should be translated "When God began to create heaven and earth." The Hebrew word for "God," Elohim, is not a personal name, but a general Hebrew word for deity and can refer to pagan gods. God's first creation, light, serves as a symbol of life, joy, justice, and deliverance. This light, independant of the sun, became the subject of many rabbinic comments.

Useful, Illuminating Commentary
By Paul Q. Kucera
I first encountered this series in seminary (Presbyterian). I very much appreciate the layout: Hebrew text and English translation at the top (upper 1/4 to 1/3 of the page), with verse by verse commentary at the bottom of the page. Sarna includes several excursuses (excursi?) at the end of the volume. Sarna seems to employ the historical-critical method in his interpretation, while at the same time offering some speculative reflections upon the psychological states of the patriarchs and other figures of Genesis. As with any commentary, each reader will have to make his or her own decisions as to the helpfulness and insightfulness of the interpretation. I find many of the comments helpful. Coming at the text from a Christian perspective, I especially appreciate Sarna's Jewish perspective on the text. For readers not used to Hebrew, it may be helpful to note that the commentary, like the Hebrew Bible, reads from right to left ("backwards" for people used to reading left to right).

Fantastic Commentary That Should Be Added To Your Library
By A. P. Smith
I love this commentary. I teach Sunday School in a Methodist Church. I love the Jewish exegetical style of study but, since I don't read Hebrew, I have had trouble finding something I could understand. This is geared toward the English reader and is very detailed. Each verse is broken down and gets at least a page of commentary. It's understandable and helps me understand the nuances of the Hebrew language that I just don't get reading the Bible in English. I highly recommend.

Vector Basic Training: A Systematic Creative Process for Building Precision Vector Artwork, by Von Glitschka

Attention, designers, it’s time to get serious about your creative process. For too long you’ve allowed yourself to go soft, relying on your software to do all of your creative work at the expense of your craftsmanship. This book will NOT show you how to use every tool and feature in Adobe Illustrator. This book WILL, however, teach you the importance of drawing out your ideas, analyzing the shapes, and then methodically building them precisely in vector form using the techniques explained in this book.

In Vector Basic Training, Second Edition acclaimed illustrative designer Von Glitschka takes you through his systematic process for creating the kind of precise vector graphics that separate the pros from the mere toolers. Along the way, he’ll whip your drawing skills into shape and show you how to create elegant curves and precise anchor points for your designs. In addition to new illustrative examples throughout the book, this edition includes an all-new chapter on how to apply color and detail to your illustrations using tried-and-true methods that you’ll use over and over again. You’ll also get access to over seven hours of all-new HD video tutorials and source files so you can follow along with Von as he walks you through his entire process.

Whether you’re creating illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, CorelDRAW, or even Inkscape, you’ll be able to use Von’s techniques to establish a successful creative process for crafting consistently precise illustrations every single time you pick you up your pen, stylus, or mouse.

Review

“The problem with vector images today is that I hate most of them! Mainly because something dies between the drawing and the precision vector graphic version. Perhaps it’s the illustration’s soul lost in the transition? Most vector images today contain too many cyber-slick gradations; they are too mathematically perfect, like many of the billions of images populating millions of microstock sites that lack anything real and human. If Von’s book can help improve a designer’s ability to create better vector images, I’m all for it. And remember: Just because you can make everything a gradation doesn’t mean you should make everything a gradation.”

—Charles S. Anderson, Founder of CSA Design

“WithVector Basic Training, Von Glitschka shames me. And I thank him for it. He reminds me that I am walking a tightrope of forsaking my first love: drawing. Von approaches the process with an honor and reverence that emerges from a tradition rooted in art as much as design. His depth of thought, trained hand, and ability to art direct himself have produced a stunning body of work, and he brings it all home inVBTto share with the reader. That’s the thing with Von—not only is he a powerful talent, he’s gracious enough to share it all. I’ll be keeping my copy ofVBTnext to my Mac and, yes, my sketchpad.”

—Terry Marks, Creative Principal of TMARKS Design Studio

“Von’s experience as an award-winning ‘illustrative designer’ enables him to provide a valuable methodology for creating vector artwork guaranteed to produce results for every designer.”

—Earl Gee, Creative Director, Gee + Chung Design

“As president of the School of Advertising Art (SAA), I would like to thank Von for writing this book. Young designers need to understand the power of the drawing process, and they need to know that time spent sketching before jumping to the computer is time well spent on any project. Von clearly demonstrates this philosophy throughout the book by incorporating interesting visual examples of his work. I am excited to shareVector Basic Training, Second Editionwith SAA students.”

—Jessica Graves, President, School of Advertising Art, Kettering, Ohio

A textbook in the truest sense of the word.
By Sean
This is not a how-to book. You will not learn how to draw an awesome tiger or a sweet ninja in the Vonster style. You will not find any magical buttons in Adobe Illustrator that autodraw your work.

On the other hand, this is definitely a how-to book. You will learn how to think, follow a creative process and you will learn how to construct vector artwork.

As a designer, creating quality, polished vector art can often be the hardest part of the job. Frequently, the construction methodology and the 'Why?' takes a backseat to other things while you're in school; it takes time to learn these once you're working in the field. Von generously pulls back the curtain and gives everyone a long, detailed look at the steps his creative process takes, but also the reasoning behind everything he does. It's rare to have such an in-depth, practical look at creative methodology and this book offers exactly that.

I cannot recommend this book enough. If you're a pro or if you're a student, it doesn't matter. If you're in design school you need to own this book. I promise that your portfolios will be better for it when you graduate. I followed Von's blog for years, learning lessons where I could to enhance my own skill set. It's wonderful to see his process in this richly deconstructed view and understand that you too can produce quality vector artwork if you'll apply the theories and practices he puts forth. It's a little like taking a digital illustration course from the man himself, only you don't have to commute or wake up on time for class.

Good reading!

Vonster is the Master
By Rick Yaeger
Most books in the computer graphics section of a book store will teach you which tools do what, where to find which menus and how to cut corners to make artwork that is good enough to get by. If that's what you're looking for, buy a different book. Von Glitschka uses Adobe Illustrator to create one-of-a-kind works of art, not cookie cutter effects that can be followed step-by-step to achieve the same results regardless of talent or experience.

This really is basic training; it's boot camp. Von is gonna make you work.

When was the last time you bought a computer graphics book that had an area designate specifically for doodling and insisted on the reader going out and investing in a good sketchbook--not an iPad, an actual sketchbook...with pages and binding!? I'll help jog your memory: that answer is never--it never happened...until now.

You've got big dreams? You want to be a vector artist? Well, artistic chops cost. And right here is where you start paying ... in graphite.

Von is your man. Buy the book and learn something real.

The missing link
By P. Maddox
I've been doing vector illustration for years and one of the hardest things to master is the bezier tool. Google search after search has turned up only remedial information about this topic and now this book has brought it home! I'm so happy to have bezier best practice and theory broken down with great visual representations and a multimedia disc to boot. Von is an exceptional author who knows his craft well and isn't afraid to share!
