John Locke was among the most famous philosophers and political theorists of the 17th century. About the Author
Born in 1632 in Somerset, England, Locke was the son of an attorney in a middle-class family. In 1652 he went to Oxford and studied medicine. The first earl of Shaftesbury introduced Locke to the world of politics, and early in their association, Locke served as secretary of the Board of Trade and Plantations and secretary to the Lords Proprietors of the Carolinas. In 1696, Locke was made Commissioner of Trade, a position he held for several years before his death in 1704.

Philosophical Landmark

This is one of the most important works ever written. In the Second Treatise, Locke lays down the theory of natural law and how it relates to the individual as well as to government. Although he was not the first or the only writer tp elaborate such a theory, his interpretation is clear and eloquent, as can be seen in its use in the Declaration of Independence. The First Treatise was basically a refutation of the now obscure authoritarian work "Patriarcha" by Sir Robert Filmer. Although it is an interesting piece, it has long been rightfully overshadowed by its partner. If for some reason you are actually seeking a refutation of Filmer, I would refer you to Algernon Sidney's more lengthy "Discourses Concerning Government." By far the finest edition of this work is Peter Laslett's, and I consider the purchase of any other edition a sorry waste of money. In his lengthy introductory essays, he traces the historical,political, and philosophical background of John Locke's life and ideas as well as the actual writing of the work itself. His greatest contribution however, is proving that the work was written well before the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

DONT BE SCARED! Locke for non-scholars

I'm no genius. A pedant, perhaps, and an arrogant jerk, but not a guy with the kind of education it seems other reviewers have. I can't tell you who Locke's friends were or what his political connections were, either. I have some vague notion that Locke's and Mill's ideas influenced the philisophical basis of the American founding documents, but I'm just a soldier who sometimes likes to bite off more than he can chew--I wan't to know the stuff them smart people do, and don't see any reason I shouldn't!

So if you're like me, let me encourage you to get this book. Your friends will almost certainly call you a nerd (after all, who reads 17th century political philosophy for FUN?), and it'll take a few pages to cut your teeth on the language, but after you get going, this book is a breeze. I can't tell you the philisophical doctrines nor their framework in several distinct points, but I can tell you this: the language, to one of average education, was a little hard to wrap my brain around, but what worked for me was just to set a pace and trudge through it without getting hung up on the one sentence that twisted my mind into a pretzel. After a few pages (maybe 10 or 15) I found that my brain was correcting for the nature of the wording, and for the rest of the book, I swear, I understood what was going on through the second treatise and the Letter, too.

After I got going, I was all highlighters and folded corners, but it had too many profound and simple statements to save them all in my head. If you're even vaguely political, this book will make points as absolutely applicable to today's world politics as it did to those of the bygone time. It applies from everything from the crazy long haired hippie communist democrats to the crazy power-mad Neocons, but it'll make you wish with all your heart that both ruling parties of American Government would give it a quick read over the recess.

Anyhow, I rate this work as 4 stars out of 5. Mostly that's because I have absolutely nothing to compare it against, and am therefore hesitant to give it 5 stars, because it's the first political philosophy I've ever read. But dammit, it seems like a pretty good one to me. Just don't let it scare you off, you don't need to be a genious to understand this. Let's even the playing field between us regular people and the academic jerks (love you guys, really, just making a point) that like to write reviews even Locke wouldn't understand :) This stuff is great, and it's great for even those who, like me, are only moderately intelligent readers.

John Locke's classic in handy format +plus bonus essay

In his book, Second Treatise of Government, John Locke (1632 - 1704) writes that all humans are born equal with the same ability to reason for themselves, and because of this, government should have limitations to ensure that people are free from the arbitrary will of another person, according to the laws of nature. Government, in Locke's view, is a social contract between the people in control, and the people who submit to it.
The editor of this edition, C. B. Macpherson, gives a little background and overview in his introduction to this book. He writes that the book "was directed against the principles of Sir Robert Filmer, whose books, asserting the divine authority of kings and denying any right of resistance, were thought by Locke and his fellow Whigs to be too influential among the gentry to be left unchallenged by those who held that resistance to an arbitrary monarch might be justified." (p. viii)
Locke's book served as a philosophical justification for revolting against tyrannical monarchies in the Glorious Revolution and the American Revolution. His book was practically quoted in the Declaration of Independence.
Locke lays out his basis for government on the foundation that people are able to reason. Because of this, people have inherent freedoms or natural rights. Though he believed in reason, Locke was an empiricist, meaning he believed that all knowledge of the world comes from what our senses tell us. The mind starts as a "tabula rasa", latin for an empty slate. As soon as we are born, we immediately begin learning ideas. Thus, all the material for our knowledge of the world comes to us through sensations. Nevertheless, Locke had an unshakable faith in human reason. He believed that people do learn what is right and wrong, regardless of what they choose to do. Locke believed that faith in God, certain moral norms and understanding consequences were inherent in human reason. So, even though people acquire everything they know about the world through the senses, they are able to think for themselves and reason at a higher level about what they learn.
Locke presumed that there are universally recognized principles and that the consequences are practically scientific. He was greatly influenced by Isaac Newton (1647-1727) who wrote The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy. Locke took the ideas that there were "natural laws" in science and tried to extend that to society.
Natural laws, or rights, in Locke's view, are obvious and learned through human reasoning, and apply to everyone. They are also called "self-evident," which appears in The Declaration of Independence. All humans are created equal, and Locke bases this idea on the golden rule, that people are to do to others as they would have others do to them. Natural equality is the basis of the first and most important "natural law" which is to care for one another. (p. 9) Locke believes that with or without government, there were universal natural rights.
Without government, people are unprotected from harm by other people. Where there is no government, people are free to do as they please, even to harm others. In this state, natural laws still apply, such as the right of people to protect themselves and seek reparation for injuries done to them. However, people are naturally inconsistent in executing punishments, because they have a propensity to act out of hate or revenge. Therefore, laws are necessary in a civil society to fairly arbitrate justice. The purpose of creating a civil society is to avoid major conflicts and keep peace.
Thus, civil government is a "contract" between people to regulate their affairs fairly. According to Locke's theories, people enter into a social contract by forming governments that will preserve order.
Locke describes a civil government as being democratic with some checks to ensure that it does not overstep its boundaries, and having both legislative and executive powers. A civil government is democratic or representative, meaning laws are created by the consent of the people through the voice of a majority vote. The legislature should represent the people equally based on population. (Salus populi suprema lex) All people are subject to the law, including the rulers-no one is above the law. Even the legislature needs "standing rules" to keep it from over-stepping its boundaries. Locke advocated the principle of division of powers. Because the legislature only meets at appointed times to create or revise laws, there needs to be an executive power that is constantly enforcing the laws. So Locke describes a division of the legislative and executive powers.
In contrast to what was being claimed by the rulers of the time, Locke taught that the purpose of government is to serve and benefit the people and that it should be controlled by the people for which the government was made. His claim that people have the right to rebel against government was controversial. Second Treatise of Government served as a foundation for future political philosophies.

Highly rewarding overview and guidebook!

This book should be in high schools, in marriage council services, in life skill courses, in life planning and development courses, in retreats, in all sports lounges and arts colleges, galleries and arts supply stores. It would also be of great help to people trying to look for work, change career, deal with family or friend issues, change culture/home location, understand world news, understand political processes and to help you gain a very healthy sense of humor as you gain insight into the wide variety of ways humans operate in complex situations and either perform marvelously or screw up and then create or get caught in catastrophes.

It's a nice overview of the "lens of perception", it's functions and its relationship to the "logos", which is the combined collection of all the "lenses" out there, including the cosmos (I guess). The idea is truly core to most spiritual wisdom traditions who all try to deal with it, and Bennett lists four major ways that's done.

To understand how all four ways work or don't work I personally find highly rewarding, as even those spiritual traditions like Zen will appreciate the wider perspective; if you want to clear the lens, in the process of cleansing it, you discover what's in it! If you want to discover what the lens is and how it operates in general or in your own life and then how you can work with it, cleansing it (zen) or having some objective assistance (science) can help both reveal it and cleanse it.

I've studied zen texts from a variety of authors, greatly appreciate Buddhist and Taoist authors and related, such as Alan Watts, Carlos Castaneda, Pema Chodron, Chogyam Trungpa, Suzuki, Lao-Tzu, Chuang-Tse, etc. Digging deep into these spiritual wisdom practices of east and west reveals a great core concern for the "lens of perception" and that dealing with it is not a simple of matter of either turning it off or fully on. It's essentially "on" to some degree, so you both need to understand it and also have some capacity to objectively work with it while not getting totally controlled by it.

Bennett takes you through a good discussion of the "lens of perception", then the "logos" and in the later chapters talks through various means used to discover how your own lens is operating and how you can use it in a healthy, productive way and not just be blindly subject to it.

I'm totally convinced, through other sources primarily, that you simply can't learn much from the spiritual wisdom traditions if this issue isn't clearly understood as BEING A CORE CONCERN! It would be hellish to try to build a healthy spiritual life if you didn't understand this. Good teachers past and present soon state the case clearly (fortunately!). Poor teachers will NOT tell you what's going on, and this is perhaps the prime difference between authentic spiritual wisdom and what goes for common "religion". Religion has a tradition of NOT allowing YOU to understand anything and put blind faith in vague myths about desperado cult leaders from middle eastern deserts from 2000 years ago. YOU can do much better and YOU are free to do so.

Bennett also makes the crutial connection to TAKING ACTION! If you've read any Tony Robbins, you know that Robbins (and career coaches, sports coaches, arts training, etc.) has always focused on providing help that drives you to liberated, more healthy ACTIONS, as a better state of being, not as some kind of super-goal system that will never arrive. It's about handling your constant state of reality, not separating yourself from it. Goals as your living process, not goals as whimsical or impossible dreams (so many young grads have outragiously unrealistic career and self-image dreams - they need to establish a constant process of living with reality to facilitate their good ideas and shed anything phony or that separates them from reality).

So I'm glad that Bennett drives forward to that point, of integrating the meditative, insightful, creative and honest (and even the sometimes self-deceiving) components of the "lens of perception" with a constantly cycling and evolving series of actions. The feedback loop must work both ways or no potential is built or results realized (hence, like a good songwriter, you wade into the process and have some adventures to talk about!). The actions and meditative/contemplative mind/body perception building and cleansing states are mixed with the real world constantly. Nothing in this book is about living in isolation or just skimming through texts academically.

Playing in the "invisible sandbox"

Beginning with the premise that "we are all part of a reality that is not at all as we perceive it through our five senses," Hal Zina Bennett weaves words that mesmerize, providing fleeting glimpses into his own "invisible sandbox." Sometimes, he does this through chilling nightmares and hallucinations that feel real despite their grotesque landscapes. Sometimes, he tells personal stories that cannot be explained using science or reason. Still other times, by using language logically the way we are used to hearing it, he offers exercises to help the reader tap into his own subconscious. The chapter on Global Compassion is magnificent. Bennett shares some of his own inner struggles as he reaches the conclusion that "(h)ealing ourselves or our planet is not ... an exact science, but an art, a way of life. At its best, it's a spiritual discipline that makes full use of all that we know of the inner world and our relationship to what we perceive to be the physical world."

Finally, something to verify this.

I found this book by chance at a discount book store outside of Mesa, AZ. I was driving cross-country and was about to leave when I found the store in a mini-mall. I waltzed in and found a section dedicated to metaphysical books where I spent over an hour scouring the shelves. This was the last book I looked at before I left and after all that searching, it felt like the book had found me. I paid $4.50 that day. The ideas explored in this book are no less than what I'd been searching for. Certain things Hal explains verified my own thoughts and helped me discover new ways of employing my introspection and reason. The book went above and beyond in explaining how to see things more clearly and interact with my thoughts. There were certain strategies that I found holes in, but Hal explains that they may not work for everyone. I have read books that focus on meditation, which is one of the sure-fire ways to see things as they really are and to focus your positivity. Bennett's method's can be relied upon or combined with other methods to meditate effectively. It's imperative that, while reading this book, you clearly understand what is going on. It is meant to be read thoroughly, and is sharp enough to keep you interested in the journey. I will definitely read this again.

Phenomenal parenting book, full of ageless and sound Biblical wisdom

As a minister and Christian counselor, I could not be more impressed with L.R. Knost's new book. She is well researched in Scripture and looks at it in its original context, allowing it to inform her perspective (instead of taking her perspective and seeking prooftexted Scripture to support it like many Christian authors have dangerously done over the years). If you want to learn to be a parent after God's own heart, this book will lead and guide you and you will find yourself drawing near to Jesus time after time in the way you seek to love, grow and teach your little ones. It is a practical, informative read, written in her typical easy-to-read style where you can look at a chapter or two over a cup of coffee or while you are out running errands. It will be my go-to book!

A breath of fresh air for Christian parents.

In Jesus, the Gentle Parent, Knost beautifully illustrates the heart of the Father. She gently points readers' eyes directly to where Christian eyes should be fixed, the Cross - the Cross, where we all received the gift of an undeserving grace and an unconditional love which our children should not be deprived of. Jesus paid the penalty for our sin, yet self-proclaimed experts like Williams maintain that the smallest of us must continue to pay the penalty for theirs.

"Grace is the point. The whole point. Everything leading up to the Cross pointed to the Cross, everything was settled on the Cross, and on the cross,in the outstretched arms of Jesus is where grace was born. (L.R. Knost)

This book, however, is not just a book which discusses Christian theology, but is a practical guide for parenting children from infancy to adolescence. Newborns, toddlers, preschoolers, middle childhood, and teens and beyond are all addressed by the author as she explains how to parent our little ones responsively, consciously, and with a compassionate heart in each age and stage.

The Discussion Questions and Points to Ponder near the end of the book are invaluable as they implore us to look inside ourselves to see what our true beliefs are and where we acquired our beliefs, and more importantly to seek God for wisdom in our parenting choices. She doesn't expect you to take her word blindly but to seek counsel from the Creator.

Jesus, the Gentle Parent is a breath of fresh air for Christian parents. It is a paradigm-changing resource that I recommend to every parent who wants to show their children the heart of our God. Lay down your rods and pick up your child in loving arms as you gently point them to the Cross. One of the chapters is titled "Grace has a Face." I love that, because it's true. Jesus is the face of Grace, but to little children, the face of grace is you.

Hands down, the best book L.R.Knost has ever written, and that's saying a lot because I love her other books. As I read, I kept telling my husband, “This is groundbreaking. This is an IMPORTANT book. This changes everything.” Not only is Jesus, the Gentle Parent extremely well written and engaging, as L.R.’s books always are, but it is life-changing. I cannot thank her enough for writing this important book. I know how much courage it took.

So far, very good...

I am moving from FrontPage to Expression Web 4, so I'm not a total novice. I bought Sam's 24-hour handbook, and ran into snags that made me give up. So I bought this handbook by someone who clearly is an experienced author approved by Microsoft. I'm literally going "step by step" and am learning a lot, with a minimum of snags or unclear instructions. Once I've reached the end (it will take awhile because there are 500-plus pages... but luckily I am not under pressure to learn it overnight or in "24 hours"), I'll be pretty savvy, and I'll have a good reference book to use for my own site. A bonus is the online tutorial, plus the practice files you download and use in the lessons.

Too Technical Too Quick

I bought this book for someone else who gave up in chapter two. I picked it up, and if not for my years of experience would have given up in chapter two as well. I don't understand why he jumps right in to installing alternate PHP engines, and making the Development Server functional. Not only is such immediate depth unnecessary, in some cases the instructions either aren't right, or other cases unclear. In chapter one, we're installing alternate browsers, and adjusting settings that no normal user has an idea about. ...and all of this before we just simply create a site from a template. I know Website design can be as deep and complex as a person wants, but it doesn't have to start out that way. Simple web pages are, well, simple. But this book scared away the potential helper I thought I had lined up.

Expressions web 4

I found the book to be very helpful. I used FrontPage before switching to Expressions Web 4 and do find the new program to be a lot more difficult than FrontPage. Expressions is a much more fuller program and would take more time and effort to learn. The book was instrumental in making that process much easier.

Learn why the media fails our representative republic!!!!

Bennett offers a great insight into the manner in which the media works. The media's job is to make money for their parent companies. To that end the media needs to keep viewers watching their product. This, however, does not mean that better information will be produced by the media in order to keep people watching their product. Rather, it means they will do what they need to keep viewers regardless of whether this means that will produce better information for their viewers. For instance, they might provide more information about celebrities or entertainment. In this instance, they would be engaging in "infotainment," rather than informing the public. Bennett says all of this clearly and in a more engaging manner using many real life examples. Get it and see what the media does and why it fails us!!!

I was surprised I liked this book.

This book was required for a journalism class I'm taking. I'm glad it was or I'd never have considered reading it. I despise politics and was dreading taking this class and reading this book. I was pleasantly surprised by this author's honest and direct approach to explaining the complicated relationship between journalists and politics. I'm in my senior year of college, and this is perhaps the only one of my school books that I'll happily save to re-read again someday. This version was also cheaper than the one my university bookstore was selling; same edition but printed by a different publisher. Score.

About the Author
Professor Kay-Tee Khaw trained in medicine at Girton College, Cambridge and then at St. Mary's Hospital London where she had the transforming experience of being taught clinical medicine and epidemiology by Geoffrey Rose. She was one of the students on the first year of the Masters in Epidemiology course that Geoffrey Rose started in the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and his ideas have continued to inspire her through many international clinical and academic posts. She is a principal investigator in EPIC, a prospective population study on diet, cancer, and chronic disease, which involves 500,000 participants from ten European Countries which aims to identify nutritional, hormonal and other factors which determine good health. She also co-ordinates an annual World Heart Federation/World Health Organisation International Teaching Seminar, originated by Geoffrey Rose.

Excellent Holocaust teaching resource

I came across this title whilst visiting the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The title captured my interest "I never saw another butterfly: Children's Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp, 1942-1944". Immediately, my interest was piqued - who were these children, and what happened to them during those dark days of the Holocaust? I was also keen to discover the artwork of these innocent children who had been victims of Nazi oppression and brutality.

Between the years 1942-1944, about 15,000 children were incarcerated at various times in the Terezin [or Theresienstadt] Concentration Camp, just outside of Prague. This camp was promoted as the 'ideal' camp by the Nazis, who used it as a cover-up for their brutalities in other camps, such as the death camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Dachau, Majdanek, Sobibor, etc. The Nazis were so successful in their propaganda efforts that even the Red Cross was hoodwinked into believing that conditions in the camp were exemplary, and that inmates flourished here. The reality was far from the truth as conditions were terrible - starvation and diseases flourished, and the inhabitants were merely biding their time before being shipped off to the camps in the east for extermination.

Of those 15,000 children under the age of 15, only 100 survived...but before these innocent lives were taken, many of these children wrote poems describing their thoughts and feelings and produced works of art that voiced their innermost fears and desires. Thanks to the great number of art teachers in this camp, children continued to gain access to art supplies and were given an outlet to vent their creativity and frustration. Many of these pictures are now displayed in the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. As I perused these pictures on the wall, my soul silently cried out for all the lost potential due to the premature annihilation of these innocent lives [though a few of these children did survive the Holocaust]. One poignant image is of a simple drawing of a little child running into a house with a sun in the background - which was so simple yet effective in conveying the desperate need of a child for the comfort of home from which he/she had been torn away from, so very violently.

This is a great resource for parents and educators seeking to make the Holocaust more accessible to children. I think it's suitable for children ages 7 and older, if only because some of the poems are a bit 'deep' in content.This is also a wonderful resource to get children to express themselves through art. Highly recommended!
