About the Author

Caroline Brettell received her B.A. degree from Yale University and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Brown University. She joined the faculty of the Department of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University in 1988, and in 2008 was named University Distinguished Professor. From 1989 to 1994, she served as Director of Women’s Studies, and from 1994 to 2004 she served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology. From 2006 to 2008, she served as Interim Dean of Dedman College, the Humanities and Sciences College at Southern Methodist University. Her research interests are in the areas of immigration, gender roles, European ethnography, and anthropology and history. She is the author of Men Who Migrate, Women Who Wait: Population and History in a Portuguese Parish (1986), We Have Already Cried Many Tears: The Stories of Three Portuguese Migrant Women (1982, 1995), Writing against the Wind: A Mother’s Life History (1999), and Anthropology and Migration: Essays on Transnationalism, Ethnicity and Identity (2003); coauthor with Richard Brettell of Painters and Peasants in the 19th Century (1983); editor of When They Read What We Write: The Politics of Ethnography (1993) and Constructing Borders/Crossing Boundaries: Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration (2007); coeditor of International Migration: The Female Experience (1986), Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective (Prentice Hall 1993, 1997, 2001, 2005), Gender and Health: An International Perspective (1996), Migration Theory: Talking Across Disciplines (2000, 2007), Citizenship, Political Engagement, and Belonging: Immigrants in Europe and the U.S (2008), and America’s Twenty-First Century Immigrant Gateways: Immigrant Incorporation in Suburbia (2008). Her most recent book, co-authored with Deborah Reed-Danahay is titled Civic Engagements: The Citizenship Practices of Indian and Vietnamese Immigrants (2012). She is also the author of numerous book chapters, and articles. Professor Brettell has served as a member of National Institutes of Health (NIH) Study Section-SNEM 3 and several selection panels for the Social Science Research Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). She has served as President of the Society for the Anthropology of Europe and of the Social Science History Association. She has conducted field research in France, Portugal, and Canada and is currently engaged in a long-term study of new immigrants into the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area with funding from the National Science Foundation and the Russell Sage Foundation.

Carolyn Sargent received her B.A. degree from Michigan State University, her M.A. degree from the University of Manchester, and her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She is Professor of Anthropology and Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. From 1979 to 2008, she served as Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University, where she was Director of Women’s Studies from 1994 through 2007. She is currently a research fellow at IRIS, an interdisciplinary social science laboratory associated with the University of Paris 13, CNRS, EHESS, and INSERM. Her research interests are in the areas of global health, gender and reproduction, and bioethics. Sargent is the author of The Cultural Context of Therapeutic Choice: Obstetrical Decisions among the Bariba of Benin (1982), and Maternity, Medicine and Power: Reproductive Decisions in Urban Benin (1989); and coeditor of Reproduction, Globalization and the State (Duke University Press 2011); Medical Anthropology: A Handbook of Theory and Method, Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective (Prentice Hall 1993, 1997, 2001, 2005), Gender and Health: An International Perspective (1996), Childbirth and Authoritative Knowledge (1997), and Small Wars: The Cultural Politics of Childhood (1998). In addition to several book chapters, she has also authored numerous articles, many of them published in Medical Anthropological Quarterly and Social Science and Medicine. She has conducted fieldwork in West Africa and the Caribbean and is currently engaged in a long-term study of West African immigrants in France funded by the Wenner Gren Foundation and the National Science Foundation. She has served on a Senior Advisory Panel of the National Science Foundation and on the Executive Board for the Society for Medical Anthropology. In 2007 she assumed the role of President of the SMA. She has also served on the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche as external reviewer for social science research.

This book of approximately 100 pages, together with an audio CD, is an excellent guide to heart and lung sounds. The book is very thorough and complete and at the same time small enough to fit into a (fairly large) pocket. It is written by three experts in the field of cardiac and respiratory auscultation. The book provides step-by-step instructions on how to identify, interpret and differentiate normal heart and lung sounds, abnormal heart and lung sounds, murmurs and arrhythmias. Complete with pre as well as post reading 'test', the book and CD will tell you how much of different heart and lung sounds you already knew before entering the 'course' and how much you have learned from reading the book and listening to the CD. The book is divided into four chapters as follows: Heart sounds, Murmurs, Arrhythmias, and Lung sounds. Each chapter begins with clearly stated objectives followed by a pre-test to evaluate your level of knowledge beforehand. After reading the text and listening to the CD there is an appropriate post-test to evaluate what you have learned. Bothe simulated sounds and natural sounds from clinical cases are presented on the CD. Simulated sounds allow the listener to focus on heart sounds without the distraction of breathing sounds and artifacts. Natural sounds of murmurs and abnormal respiration are included to represent the clinical situation. Graphic presentations of ECG's and phonocardiogram's accompany the heart sounds for clarity. This appears to be a very efficient way on conveying knowledge to the reader. Each chapter is also equipped with tables for a quick reference of differential diagnoses for different auscultatory phenomena, making the book very useful as a handbook to be used in day-to-day practice. In summary, this book and CD are excellent tools to help learn the difficult art of auscultation and is useful for the veterinary student as well as the experienced clinician. Ken Williamson is a software engineer and architect with over twenty years of experience in the technology industry. Ken's first programming language was Assembly language using the 6502 chip. learning ^bad AngularJS

I hate writing bad reviews because of all the work and resources that go into a book. However, I bought this based on the O'Reilly brand to help a coworker get up to speed with AngularJS. Within a few minutes of looking over the book I wanted to throw it in the trash. This book was released in March 2015 and claims to address AngularJS 1.3, but doesn't reflect fundamentally important changes to things like controllers. The first thing that caught my eye is it teaches the pre- 1.2 $scope binding instead of the clearer controllerAs/this syntax.. which is a big deal. There's other annoyances, like suggesting you spend time setting up netbeans or focusing on rest, but not mentioning the word asynchronous, much less discussing $q, .then, promises, or resolve. I've wasted enough resources on this book. The only thing I like was the amount of focus on testing, hence the two stars, but I doubt the reader could make anything worth testing based off the information the author provided. THIS WAS MY FIRST TERRIBLE O'REILLY BOOK. DON'T MAKE IT YOURS.

Great intro for someone who has experience with JavaScript, MVC frameworks, CLI package managers and Unit testing

I was starting a new contract that used angular, which I had never used before, so I bought this book and AngularJS Web Application Development by Matt Frisbie. I read this book fairly quickly, on the flight down to the contract gig. It was a great intro to angular for someone like myself who has experience with JavaScript, MVC frameworks, CLI package managers and Unit testing.

This book was way too basic for my needs. This may be because it's a year old and Angular is changing quickly, but I bought this instead of "AngularJS: Up and Running" because "Learning AngularJS" was publishing more recently. The book took far too much time on repeating its unit testing methods, when I really just wanted to learn syntax and all the features in Angular.

Applied neuroscience minus the hype and fantasy

Well researched and clearly written by an expert. Provides a unique look into actual application of the latest findings in neuroscience without all the unrealistic hype and fantasy. Also, the best treatment of ethical considerations in neuroscience. Don't let the hokey name and cover illustration throw you off.

His book provides interesting insight into some of the government intelligence agency projects but mostly with a one-sided view

For someone who is a professor of Biomedical Ethics, written a book on Secret State Experiments on Humans, served as a senior staff member on two presidential ethics commissions, served as president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, I'm surprised that he believes "those who think they have been victimized by government mind control experiments are misguided". His book provides interesting insight into some of the government intelligence agency projects but mostly with a one-sided view on how useful the projects are with little consideration of potential ethical concerns or mention of previous human subject experimentation violations such as MKUltra.

Excellent book!

I too recently took a ''neuro-ethics'' course with the author, and I wasn't required to purchase this book - I did so because the material in the course was utterly engrossing and I wanted more, more, more. This book did not disappoint. Open your eyes and mind, and start thinking more fully about where the world has been and where it is headed - something we all need to do. Highly recommended!
